effort/duration

I started a new project and broke out my tasks,
in looking at the column for effort and the other for duration they do not match.

since I have an 7hour working day with a task that is 7h in effort - should not the duration also equal 1 day rather than 1d 4 h?

You'll have to give us more information. Do you have resources assigned to the task? Are they assigned at 100%? What is the efficiency for the resources assigned?
