View Full Version : Duplicate a Project
I have certain sets of tasks I use over again. On OmniFocus for Mac, I create a project with all of the typical actions and label it Sample XXX. When I need it again, I just duplicate the project and make my changes. I don't see a way to duplicate a project on the iPad version. Am I missing it or is that a feature that isn't available yet?

You should be able to tap and hold on the "template" project, select Copy, then Paste it, but I get a reliable crash when I do so, so you might have to wait for a bug fix...send in a report with Contact Omni to bump up the priority...
When I tap and hold on a Project title my choices are the following:
Focus, Paste, Delete, Review, and New Action
I don't see Copy. I am using the Project view when I am doing this.
One thing I can do is create an overall group of tasks in my "template" project. I can set up a new project and then copy the group of tasks from my "template" project and paste them into my new project. I'd rather a one step duplicate but at least this works.

Ah, you're right! Well, if you use the search function to find the project, and tap and hold on the project in the results, you'll get the Copy option. However, I now wonder if perhaps that is unintentional in the case of a project...
Send in a bug report with Contact Omni from the gear menu!

I would also be very interested in the ability to create and duplicate templates within OF for iPad.

Again, use Contact Omni to make your requests heard. Forum posts aren't tracked, and may not even be seen...

Thanks for the feedback, we have a request in to support copying projects and I've added your vote.
Since you can promote actions to projects there is a potential workaround. Set up your template as an action group, and use the parent action's copy/paste and move features to get your new project. This is a bit fiddly but it should get you to where you want to be. The help should get you started, here's a link to the relevant section (http://help.omnigroup.com/ipad/omnifocus/ManagingActionsandProjects.html).

You can use "Repeat" to copy a project.
Go to your "template" location.
Set view to "ALL" so that you can see completed projects.
You can set your template project to repeat every day, then change it's status to "complete". Click "done".
The "repeat" version of your template will appear below the freshly "completed" template.
Set your original template project back to "On Hold" or "Active"
Then you can move your new project to your working locations (don't forget to turn off its repeat settings.)

Must say, SteveYYC, that's pretty smart.

Love this work around Steve, saves me some work until we (hopefully) get a copy or duplicate project function.
Thanks

There's nothing like a client suddenly bringing you thirty identical-but-complicated projects to make finding a work-around appealing. :)
The best part of this solution that I can see is that it's obvious the code associated with repeat is already using a working "copy project" function of some sort, so adding a copy-project button should be relatively straightforward.

Yes, it should be fairly straightforward to implement for 1.1, sorry it didn't make the cut for 1.0!

here's hoping it will come soon...
Maybe just after Omnioutliner for iPad?
:D
It would be great to see a proper 'template' status for projects, rather than setting them as on hold.
If it's a template I'd like it to be completely ignored within the rest of OF so it will never appear in reviews etc. but still be available in my templates folder so I can duplicate it as a new project. Of course, it would then be great to have a single 'make new project from this template' button too.
Yes I know this is all easy enough to do with on-hold projects and simply copy/paste them, or on the desktop there's Curt's script which does this too but it does seem to be something which I do a lot so I'd imagine others probably do too.
Obviously this would apply to the desktop app too, not just the iPad.
Oh, and you know what we need on the forums too...?

I just updated to 1.1, but the copy button still seems missing...
Please someone tell me I'm wrong, I so need project duplication!

Is this working yet because in the latest version you still don't seem to be able to do it.

Apologies! Checking the development database, it looks like there's been other stuff at the top of the to-do list. (Items generally get prioritized in favor of the stuff that folks are requesting most frequently.)
If you email the support ninjas (omnifocus-ipad@omnigroup.com) and let them know you need this, it'll help this move up the list, though.

Any news on this issue? I have Omnifocus for iPad 1.5.1, unless I missed something this functionality is still missing... Am I wrong? Yes, it should be fairly straightforward to implement for 1.1, sorry it didn't make the cut for 1.0!
Maybe after all it's a bit more complicated to implement that it seemed in the first place... I'm ok with that! But if it hasn't been dealt with only because it's been «*forgotten*», please...
May I make a wish for next update?
anyhow, thank you Omnigroup, for the great work of your team!
(Sorry for my painful english... My message shouldn't sound rude in anyway, if so, please blame it on my unskillfull english writing)
P.S. I have sent (just now) a message to the ninjas on this matter...

For anyone interested in the state of the matter...
This is the reply I had from the support team!
" [...] it looks like we've still got a feature request open on adding a duplicate function. I can't make any specific promises, but I added your vote to help bump up the priority. One of the factors that determines what we add to OmniFocus is the number of people that are requesting a given change, so thanks for requesting this! "
I replied that l would make a bit of advertisement...

You still can't duplicate a project, but you can duplicate an action group, then convert it to a project with the Move button in the editor. So, if you want a template project you can duplicate, make a project and make the project you want a template inside of it. When you want another copy, go to the template project, press and hold on the action group, tap copy, tap paste, open the editor, tap move, tap convert to project. If you don't like clutter, put your template projects in a folder and mark the folder as dropped, or put them all together in an all-encompassing template project.
