In addition to OW 5 I also use speed download but sometimes when I come across a file I want to dl I click the link the status indicator kicks in saying that it is loading but neither speed download nor the built in dl manager open up and begin the dl the file. In addition the page the "stops" loading leaving a empty page with the address of the file I wanted to dl in the address bar but no file to be found anywhere. Any suggestions?

Do you have any examples of where this happens?

Tomorrow I'll try to find a few places this occurs... also note I am using Speed Download 4. I'll put in the links and such

Actually here is one.

I go to download it and it looks like it's going to download but then the status indication stops and then nothing....

Does this happen if you disable speed download and restart OmniWeb?

Yea, I just tried it...

I too use OmniWeb and Speed Download. I've just picked up this thread, and have tried your link in OW 5.5sp7 and Speed Download 4. I think the problem with this one is similar to problems there used to be with earlier versions of OW and SD and certain developer's sites. I used to have it with Mariner Software's download site, though that got sorted out a while back.

If you pick up the URL from OW and then add it directly in SD, it downloads no problem. I suspect it is something to do with the coding of the developer's site rather than OW ... there are other sites where what gets downloaded is the .php linked to rather than the file referred to. So really, OG, Yazsoft and Devon need to work together on problems like this one.

Nuisance, I know.

Note to Troy, should he read the thread - could this be related to the "attachment.php" issue I am experiencing with Joel's stencil here at the forums?

To the OP - if you go to the OmniGraffle Extras forum and Joel's Clean Machines thread, what happens if you repeatedly download the stencil he has linked there. For me, it sometimes downloads as attachment.php and other times it downloads as the correct .zip file.

I've had that happen t me on several sites where it sometimes will dl and sometimes I'll have to drag the link over to SD to get it to work. Although none of the .php redirect links ever work for me even in OW 5.5

That's one where I got the attachment.php too. I don't need the stencil, so I haven't bothered to retry to see what happens.

BUMP.... the problem with Speeddownload and OW 5.5 still ocurs. Is there a solution in the works

Yes, the Speeddownload issue is due to JavaScript problems in OmniWeb and we hope to get these fixed as soon as possible.

In investigations, I don't think it is related to javascript but to the plugin support in WebKit.

but if it is a plugin support issue with webkit then why doesn't the same issue crop up with Safari since both are built upon webkit?

BTW this is my only issue with OW. Other than that it does everything I want it to and more

I seem to remember having posted on this one in another thread, but quite some time ago. The Speed Download issue occurs when the download is from another server than the one hosting the page on which the link is clicked. So, for instance, the download won't start automatically for any Omni software, as the link is on www.omnigroup.com ... but the download is hosted on www.extremesims ... Where the software for download is on the same server as the page with the link, OW hands over to Speed Download as expected, e.g. downloading a new version of Speed Download from Yazsoft's own site.
I don't think it can be a Webkit issue, since, as Flounder points out, Safari hands all downloads over to SD without problem and always has done. Mind you, SD is also optimised to work with Safari, in that the contextual menu allows you to choose whether to download through SD or to use Safari's own download engine to do the job.

Safari and OmniWeb use different versions of WebKit. Safari uses the WebKit built into your system OmniWeb uses a version of WebKit pulled from here (http://webkit.org/) (Approximately revision 13302 to be exact).

Another related issue I've had with Speed Download and OmniWeb, 5.5 and 5.5.1 beta 1 is OmniWeb chewing all of one CPU after starting a download that is kicked over to Speed Download.

Any download handled by speed download will cause OmniWeb to chew up as much CPU as it can get. Hitting the back button in OmniWeb often makes it calm down with the CPU usage, but not always. Sometimes an OmniWeb restart is required.

The Speed Download developer thought this was an OmniWeb problem that would be fixed in 5.5.1 beta 1, but it seems to still exist.

Known issue?

Thanks!

Yes, this is an OmniWeb problem and it will be fixed eventually. We were hoping to get the fix rolled into 5.5.1 however due to related changes that aren't ready yet this unfortunately wont be making it in. At this time the goal is to have things working better in 5.6, sorry to keep you waiting.

Sorry for the bother, but I'm currently enjoying the sounds of my processor going bezerk. Any developments here? Does it look fixable? I never had this problem when working with iGetter. Thanks.

This will be fixed when we update WebKit again--we are working this now for a future update sorry for the trouble here.

Hows the progress going with the speed download problem being fixed?

And is there any estimated date on which this fix may be releases?

Hello :)

I am using OW 5.6 SP6. I have recently started using Speed Download, and find that OW often hogs the CPU after handing the download over to SD. Closing the empty tab with the download-file link doesn't stop OW hogging. I have to quit OW completely.

This is a major nuisance. :(

Will it be fixed soon?

It's the biggest reason I still use Camino most of the time instead of OW.

Looks like I'll have to do the same. :(

I've found I can work around this CPU problem by dragging the download link to the Speed Download Floater.

Please fix it soon if poss ;-) Given the choice, I'll stick with OW and just launch SD for large files... but a solution here would be great.

EDIT: Testing with SD 4.1.16 - we'll see…

You know, I've wanted to love OmniWeb for years now, but it's 3 years later and you _still_ haven't worked with the SD people to cure the 100% CPU suckage problem.

So, yet again, I reach to delete my trial and wait to see when somebody will decide this issue is worth fixing.
