Could we have PNG allowed for Avatars?

Title says it all.
Currently, when I link to my Gravatar photo (which is a png), I get the error that 'this JPEG file has the wrong extension'. ;)

Looks like we need to install a different image library and tweak some settings on the server. I've emailed the appropriate folks, but they're pretty busy with a number of projects.

In the short term, it may be easier to convert the image to jpeg or gif and upload or link to the converted one.
