I have set a start page under Omniweb preferences (the BBC news site). Even so every time I launch OW it opens not the start page but the last pages that were open when I quite. I don't want this but I can't see how to stop it.

Try the following:

1. Select your home page in Preferences>General> Start Page: http://news.bbc.co.uk/
Go to the site you want to use as a home page.

2. Go to Workplace>Take Snapshot

Next time you launch OmniWeb,open a new browser, or open a new tab, it will display http://news.bbc.co.uk/

Thanks - that brings up the home page. I still get all the other pages that were open when I quit though...

Close them and take another snapshot?

This is a feature - you probably have Auto-save while browsing selected for that Workspace:

Deselect it and, upon next launch, the Workspace will restore to the snapshot rather than the last state when you quit OmniWeb. Note, to clear a Workspace completely, close all open windows and take a snapshot.

I've had an issue recently with OW setting itself to auto-save a workspace even though the checkbox is unchecked. I don't normally use Workspaces so I only have the default space with my normal homepage as my starting point. Whenever I get an unintentional auto-saving Workspace, I simply create a new Workspace and delete the old one. Often, the unintentional auto-saving Workspace has a popped-out Gmail chat window so I'm wondering if quitting with a chat still popped out is somehow responsible. I'm paying more attention to this intermittent quirk so maybe I'll narrow down the cause.
