View Full Version : How about a general state of the union address on OF at this point in time?

How about a general state of the union address on OF at this point in time? I have signed up for the sneaky peeks but I have to admit I have fallen off the wagon a few times because the rate of updates can get trying, even for bleeding edge little o me.

Any word on where development stands, what things must be overcome, and how the office pets are doing?

Throw us (me) a bone because I am struggling to make life work with just the little news that is circulating. ;)

I second this motion. Personally, I would love a quick post that gives us a sense of when this app is expected (understanding no solid commitment by this) to go into release candidate. As I play with it, I am approaching the time when I have to make a commitment for which my system will be for next year and ideally I would love to switch during this quarter to be ready and in full production for next year.

Some sort of timeline would be very helpful. Thanks.

I'm expecting we'll have real details posted this week. FWIW, I've been managing all my real world omni (and personal) work in OmniFocus as we're very close to final feature freeze.

That'd be great. I'm very hopeful that the issue where OF won't sync with calendars created in Mail via IMAP accounts can be fixed.

There's a lot of weirdness around calendars. We're aware of most of the the glaring ones. Calendar support is definitely evolving rapidly.

How's the rumored new video coming along? Can you include that in your state of the union? :)

For what it is worth, I really like the new iCal synching preferences pane. It is very nice and provides for a lot of flexibility!

A state of the state would be great. We are coming up on almost a full year of building this thing (half a year of testing).

Should be ready to call it a day and launch 1.0.

Thanks for the words Ethan. I guess it is nice to hear that you guys are actually planning on releasing this as opposed to just having us test it for Omni internal use only. :-P

I think I can remember when Omni was hopeful it would be released around March but it has been so long, I may be mixed up.

Glad to hear something is coming out because I am ready to get this purchased and get on with it. I am very unorganized at the moment and OF is an answer that may be THE answer for my situation.

Are you suggesting skipping the beta phase and going right into production?

Well, if Alpha lasts 6 months, I don't want to even see a Beta stage.

Time to fish or cut bait.

Sorry, hoped to get some announcement up last week but iMovie 08 ate my homework. Or rather my quickstart video. Taught myself FCE this weekend and redid the new quickstart video. Has a little too much "myspace" charm about it right now, but I'll try to polish off the rough edges and we'll have that up along with other information.

Sorry to hear that iMovie ate the video...

Any idea when the movie will be posted?

I'm really looking forward to the video - there are a number of areas I find a little hard to get my "small" brain around in OF and I hope the video will help. I'm particularly perplexed (say that 5 times fast) by "Start Date" and how to use it as well as the "Review" function. Thanks in advance for the video!

What do you use for your screen cast? I am using iShowU.

At least someone is saying something. However, I think people need some firm delivery dates as we have waited quite a while for this. I know Omni makes great products but there is a threshold for getting the product out and having expectations drop off for a product.

As a relative n00b drawn to here via KGTD, I've been aching for any scrap of info around OF's development and (dare I say it) release. This community's patience is remarkable -- another week and I would've cracked and started a frothingly incoherent version of this topic myself.

So yes, an update would be much appreciated.

I am very interested in the following:

— will OF work with the TODO's in Leopard's mail.app?
— will OF integrate with the iphone?

Thanks,
Steve

Sorry to hear this! Any update on the current status?

I'm interested in hearing

1. Are there any more new features we can expect in 1.0?

2. When are you going to fix some persistent bugs (including quick entry sorting of projects and contexts)?

Thanks.

Could you give us an update on the screencast? I need to commit to a gtd type app but don't want to be guessing at the best/correct way of using OF when I know a screencast is due.

Thanks for your work : )

Ethan is working on several screencasts which should be ready "soon". Ken was working on a state-of-the-focus mail to send to all the signed up alpha users; presumably it'll be on the forums too.

Hi,
I'd like to add that looking into the OF-Help-file (a bit too obscure under "Details" ) now has a lot of useful basics.

I was able to purchase without any problems using Safari.

Ken, now that was direct and to the point. I even prepurchased my family pack with the added discount of OO3 FP discount on top!

Nice move!

The first one is out on the OmniFocus page (http://www.omnigroup.com/applications/omnifocus/) in both High-Def and iPhone formats.

In my opinion, the videos are less interesting than a complete set of documentation would be.

A quickie set of alpha (not polished) video's built around specific tasks would be a HUGE help to me. I'm trying to get my head around how OF is supposed to work (particularly with mail app...) something just to point new users and kinkless folks in the right direction.

I can't afford the time to reverse engineer forum posts to get a general understanding of some example OF workflows. I'd love to get in on the Pre-sale... but I' not far enough along the OF learning curve to really benefit from OF. I'm about ready to fall back to index cards.

Please.... just slam three quick videos together on working with iCal, mail.app etc... Just quick overviews so I know what direction to head in, the basics of how we are to use the tools. I can figure out the details in the forums, but not the big picture.

Don't try and deliver polished & detailed screencasts on a Alpha product. You don't have to post the screencasts on the marketing pages. Just links from a "sticky" forum post will do the trick.

THANKS!

I agree there are certain features that are less discoverable than others:
(and while I mean you can click on them and figure out what they do, it may not be as obvious how to use that as an advantage in workflow)
- iCal sync
- Perspectives
- The Focus button
- The View filter
- How to do Reviews
- Mail integration
- Singletons
- On Hold (How to handle Waiting for)
- Setting Default contexts
- Parallel vs Sequential

I have copied the information from the "Details" section of the current version of OmniFocus help into a Pages document.

I then printed it to PDF so it is easy to print off and read.
