access vs visibility of start dates

A quick idea regarding 'start dates':

I like the fact that I can choose whether I want to have a start date column in my main view. I choose to have start date columns turned on because I typically work with the 'available' filter on; I like being able to tab into the start date column and defer a task till "tomorrow" or "1d" etc...

However, although I love being able to quickly enter start dates, i don't really ever need to *see* my start dates in context view. Infact, the start dates really just clutter up my screen.

What would people make of being able to make the start column invisible, or minimised, so that it can be easily tabbed into for quick entry of a start date, but doesn't actually *display* any information?

I'm putting this forward as more of a UI thought experiment, rather than a suggestion or feature request. I'm quite sure what the implications would be. Any thoughts?

Well I like to see the column.
Otherwise when making an error with a date it would be impossible to identify when a given task is in the indicated state or is not in the list it is supposed to be.
