What do you use outlining for?

Outlining is pretty basic at heart I guess but I'd be interested to see how you guys are applying it as a technique?

I've written about using outlining as a comprehension and writing technique but would be great to get additional ideas for stuff to write about.

And is there a usage difference for you between something like OmniOutliner and hierarchical mindmapping apps such as MindNode?

The distinctive architectural feature of OO is its conjunction of an outline with multiple columns (of various types). Combined with a rich scripting interface this makes it a flexible tool for quite a wide range of applications.
