Omni products & the iTunes App Store
My two bits on the current situation w/ no upgrade pricing on Omni products purchased through the App Store:
- The App Store is an infantilizing toy box for casual users, not power users. - As a current owner of regular (direct-purchased, not App Store) Pro licenses for Graffle, Outliner, and Focus, and Plan I would be extremely disappointed if Omni ever moves to an App Store-only / no upgrade pricing distribution method. I would probably take my business elsewhere. - Please preserve the direct-purchase and direct-upgrade options for as long as you remain in business. |

I don't see any logic in Omni moving to App Store only, but they need to be there because it's a great "shop window".
Recently a lot of pro apps I use (not just Omni's) have or will be using the transition to iOS7/Maverics to produce a major upgrade. With no upgrade pricing on the app store they're charging full price. Had I bough direct from developer stores (where possible) I'd have saved myself >$100 in the second half of this year. I'm now going to do the obvious thing and never buy an expensive app (>$20) on the App Store again (unless/until it supports upgrades). For me the app store has become a novelty shop. It's fun to browse the toys and miscellany, but when I need something significant I'll go to a specialist store or direct to the manufacturer. |
