OmniWeb needs a good working ad blocker like PithHelmet
 

I really like OmniWeb very much - especially because the 5.5 previews are rendering websites very fast on my iMac CoreDuo and workspaces are a cool feature - but until ad blocking is only poorly supported it will not be my favorite browser. Unfortunately...

At the moment I am using Safari with PithHelmet ([url]http://culater.net/software/PithHelmet/PithHelmet.php[/url]) - and that's exactly what we need for OmniWeb. I would pay for a good working ad blocker 10 $ or more... But without this feature I cannot use OmniWeb as my default browser - I do not want to see all those boring ads...

Maybe the developer of PithHelmet would give the Omnigroup team support for integrating PithHelmet in OmniWeb... Safari and OmniWeb both use WebKit - so maybe it is not to diffucult to implement PithHelmet into OmniWeb...

I prefer OW's adblocking, for the most part, to pith helmet. What is it you like so much about it?

PithHelmet filters ads more accurate - especially ads using Flash... And I do not have to set manually the URLs that are blocked (using the "Matching knows ads size" feature filters a lot of normal images) - it's a lot of work to configurate OmniWeb blocking ads. PithHelmet works without that...

Can you provide a link to a page where PH blocks the ads but OW doesn't? I hear what you're saying about Flash.

You can enable this, and then for sites where you find "good" images blocked you can set a site preference to NOT block known ad sizes.

I have my OW set to block these ads, but on a site like ign.com I have a site pref to not do this.

Oh, and FWIW I find Pith Helmet to be too complex, and its default rules block too much good content.

The only thing I think people like about adblock and pith helment is the apparent ease of just a quick right-click to add an ad to the filterset, and the ability to get rules online.

I have found OWs filtering to be more than adequate, although at first I admit I thought it lacking.

I block third party image, matching known ad sizes and blocked URLs from the start. Then use the site prefs to enable certain sites to allow for images if they're being blocked.

Other than things like creating regular expressions that catch URLs, I have yet to find a single thing I can do in PH that I can't do in OW, as well. I had created a ton of site-specific stylesheets to block or hide content (in PH), and getting them to work in OmniWeb consisted of selecting them in the site preferences. Furthermore, I can easily turn off Javascript for selected domains, which is often the culprit for ad scripts (and is an unnecessary function for a lot of sites, anyway.)

The other thing I used PH for - fine-grained cookie control - also works without a hitch in OW. I have a whitelist of sites that may set cookies permanently; every other site can set a cookie, but those cookies get purged when I close OW. Perfect.

Except for the *really* obscure functions of PH, there's nothing OW can't do, and do it through a nice and shiny GUI. Perhaps you should try specifying floppymoose.com's stylesheet as your basic site stylesheet? That should screen out most stuff.

Flash ads seem to be the most difficult to deal with; they're by far the most annoying but disabling Flash is a sledgehammer solution.

I have found, however [:D ] that the 'zap plugins' bookmarklet [URL="http://www.squarefree.com/bookmarklets/zap.html"]here[/URL] works with Flash ads on a page-by-page basis in OW5.5b1

I rarely have a problem with Flash ads, and I never disable Flash. Without a sample link, I'm not sure what to tell you.

Sorry, I meant for Flash. Would be nice to be able to ctrl-click on Flash too.

So are you in effect adding to an invisible white list when you edit a site's prefs to override the global prefs?

I hadn't known that. This is good, but I'd rather like to make visible all the members of such an invisible white list. That is, view them or access them all from a single window (not have to check the site prefs at every site I visit to discover which sites have overrides and what they are.)

[/QUOTE] Are you saying there's an explicit interface location to edit such a whitelist, or does it simply consist of all the individual site-specific preference settings?

I'm confused what you're asking for. I don't have to check the site prefs at every site. I set my global prefs first. If I go to a site that's not working properly due to blocked images (which is typically very few,) I can either hit the load image button or then go into the site prefs. I've only edited the site prefs for a handful of sites.
