V6 hierarchical diagram layout not yet fixed
1 Attachment(s)
Hierarchical diagram layouts (Inspectors > Diagram Layout > Hierarchical) have a couple of problems in V6:

The tooltip of the layout type selector reads "Fill Type"
Output such as the ambiguous and asymmetrical diagram below is generated (parent nodes still not centered over child ranges)
|
We looked into this a few days ago, and found that if you remove the magnets the layout gets much more reasonable.
That said, we'd love to fix this: we don't think adding those magnets should make the layout asymmetrical, and we still have this bug on our list to work on—but since it wasn't a regression from v5, we decided it wasn't a showstopper for today's 6.0 release. |

Just set all shapes to no magnets, and auto layout yielded the result below. Possibly I am missing something. Doesn't look very obviously 'more reasonable' to me :-) |

On the other hand, not sure when it was first reported, but probably at least two years ago – I remember filing a bug related to this issue well before this Oct 2011 post: http://forums.omnigroup.com/showthread.php?t=22469 A version number would seem like quite a good mile-stone for sorting this kind of defect out. Even the MS Office SmartArt has no problem with converting text outlines to nested diagrams in which parents are centred over child ranges. It has been doing that happily for years. |
