OF iPad app submitted to Apple!

Per a tweet from Ken, OmniFocus for iPad has been submitted to the App Store for approval.
@kcase: OmniFocus for iPad has been submitted to the App Store! (Latest stats are that 85% of new apps are reviewed within 7 days.)
Thanks Omni Group for all the hard work you've put into getting OmniFocus for iPad. Hope Apple fast tracks OF's approval. :D

Brian 2010-07-21 08:42 PM

Thanks, Jason! Both for the kind words, and for posting this before I had a chance to do so! :-)

Eye_Doc 2010-07-21 09:04 PM

Woot and double woot!! Really looking forward to clicking buy!

Thanks for the hard work and the frequent updates OmniGuys and gals!

Now everyone, quick to Apple's forums to pester them!

OK, then... Price? Pleeeeeeez!

Thanks for the update! Hope Apple gets it right now, the mindmapping app Mindmeister for iPad was according to the developers submitted to Apple on July 14 and has not been reviewed yet.

Mindmeister for iPad is out today in the App Store, so there you go: 8 days. Or maybe just a week, because of time zone effects.

MissKaren 2010-07-22 01:52 PM

I swear....I heard a chorus of angels singing "Ommmmmm....." (you know you've heard that sound in cartoons and on commercials- I just can't spell what it "sounds" like) when I clicked on the Omni site and first saw this update. Shivers up and down my spine...to say that this app has been highly anticipated is one of the biggest understatements of....well, forever! Like Costmo, ......"I'm so excited.....!!!!!..."

steven 2010-07-22 02:21 PM

Well done, Omni!

To confirm, the instant it is approved, Apple e-mails Omnigroup, who subsequently immediately notifies the subscribed mailing list, right?

More bluntly, over-checking the App Store gives no advantage, right?

:D

I think over-checking this forum and the blog are better.

The mailing list is ok, but when it comes out, they are going to be busy putting up the marketing materials, tweeting it and someone here is going to link to it first.
To confirm, the instant it is approved, Apple e-mails Omnigroup, who subsequently immediately notifies the subscribed mailing list, right?
Apple lets us know the app's approved. We'll get the website/preview video/etc in place by the time it goes live on the App Store. Once it's on the App Store, notifications will go out.

It's still possible that Apple may find something we missed or need something changed; we want to keep the "whoops, it's going to be just a bit longer" frustration down to a bare minimum if that happens.

We're pretty excited, so it's hard on us, too. Several of us are walking around the office saying "Want to spoil OmniFocus-mas... cannot spoil OmniFocus-mas... WRONG to spoil OmniFocus-mas. WANT TO SPOIL OMNIFOCUS-MAS!" :-)

MutantSquid 2010-07-23 02:38 PM

@brian

Si is Omni not going to post any information until it is approved? Perhaps you guys could let us know when the website is going to go live (e.g. before it is approved, after, when it moves to "in review," etc).

FrRalphZ 2010-07-24 08:19 AM

Merry Christmas!

Just FYI:

July 25th is "Christmas in July", a celebration which is catching on in many different venues.

Also, the "mas" in Christmas derives from Old English and literally means "to be sent" in the sense of being sent on a mission.

So how appropriate that, so close to Christmas in July, OmniFocus will be sent into our iPads, on a mission to help us all get things done!

Do I feel like a little kid waiting for Christmas morning? You betcha!

Many thanks to everyone at OmniFocus for making a little bit of the magic of Christmas happen for us all—in July!

Best Regards,

Ralph

MutantSquid 2010-07-24 08:31 PM

FYI: there are screens on Omni's server if you know where to look. Seeing how they haven't published the screens, i won't divulge the link.

@omni: Cant wait! Love the "forecast" view
Yeah, sometimes it helps to know how to look at webservers :-) Forecast looks nice. Review too.

But no perspectives to see (maybe hidden in the settings like the iPhone app)?

And the UI still gives place for improvements  If I get used to it ... mmh

BwanaZulia 2010-07-25 04:04 AM

Interesting they would make such a rookie mistake.

Interesting that the icon is different (darker).

Overall (no price information) it looks like it has a lot more features than the iPhone version (filtering, review, etc) but not as much as the desktop.

BZ

Andy 2010-07-25 04:41 AM

I like the darker icon.

Did you notice that OmniSyncServer appears in the cloud? Perhaps we may just be getting more than OmniFocus for iPad.

BwanaZulia 2010-07-25 04:47 AM

I never got to try OmniSyncServer as I use MobileMe which works like a charm.

Going over these screenshots is making me crazy.

BZ

propofol 2010-07-25 05:47 AM

I also cannot believe they posted the screenshots so transparently. I wish I knew where their screencasts were!

There is no screencast for the iPad in the directory of the server. Just the "official" stuff.

Didn't you?

So, given that you've gone gold and submitted to Apple how's about some more info and some screenies then?

masoric 2010-07-25 10:23 AM

That was clever Ken

Ken Case 2010-07-25 10:26 AM

Yes, RiK, sorry, I did say that. Can I just invite you to look into this light again for a moment? :)

We decided that rather than making a big announcement and drawing lots of traffic just to tell people "Sorry, it's not up and we don't know exactly when it will be up", it would make more sense to wait until everything could go live at the same time.

FYI: Once we're notified that OmniFocus for iPad has been approved, we'll have a little work to do on our end before it actually goes live. We'll do that work as quickly as we can (we've prepped everything in advance), and will let our OmniNews mailing list (and blog and forums and twitter) know the moment OmniFocus is available.

Presumably you're not planning to tell us about any notice from Apple you receive until such time as you've already done the last steps on your end to activate, right? In other words, we should expect notice from mailing list/blog/forums/Twitter essentially BEFORE the app can go live, and we should stop looking at the App Store, right?

Ken may step in and correct me, but I believe that the control over what minute-second-etc the app goes live is in Apple's hands.

If they put it up at the start of the day in Japan, that might be the middle of the night here. If that happens, we'll send the notifications out as soon as we can.

While there might be some small advantage to checking the app store directly, folks may be able to save themselves some stress if they let us notify them. :-)

What Brian said is true for incremental updates (which is what we're used to), but with this new product launch OmniFocus for iPad won't be available for sale until we push a button from our end as well.

So, no, it won't go live on the App Store until we push that button, and when we do that we'll let everyone know.

Here's a refresher... From looking at the list, Omni Group may need to hire a professional and rename the forum. :)

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders defines obsessive–compulsive personality disorder as:

A pervasive pattern of preoccupation with orderliness, perfectionism, and mental and interpersonal control, at the expense of flexibility, openness, and efficiency, beginning by early adulthood and present in a variety of contexts, as indicated by four (or more) of the following:

- Is preoccupied with details, rules, lists, order, organization, or schedules to the extent that the major point of the activity is lost

- Shows perfectionism that interferes with task completion (e.g., is unable to complete a project because his or her own overly strict standards are not met)

- Is excessively devoted to work and productivity to the exclusion of leisure activities and friendships (not accounted for by obvious economic necessity)

- Is overconscientious, scrupulous, and inflexible about matters of morality, ethics, or values (not accounted for by cultural or religious identification)

- Is unable to discard worn-out or worthless objects even when they have no sentimental value

- Is reluctant to delegate tasks or to work with others unless they submit to exactly his or her way of doing things

- Adopts a miserly spending style toward both self and others; money is viewed as something to be hoarded for future catastrophes

- Shows rigidity and stubbornness

Well, for me, working from home with wife & 2 month old son, the iPad is a legit game-changer. legitimate. iMac is tough to get to in office. MacBook Air is fragile, with a battery that needs replacing, and worst of all is SLOW running Omnifocus.

My wife and I have been using our iPads extensively.

How to explain to some of you hobby users that THIS IS A NEW PLATFORM. I AM ON THIS PLATFORM ALL THE TIME. N-E-W.

And here, let me beat you wise-asses to the punch:

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders defines obsessive– activities and friendships (not accounted for by economic necessity)

Well hell! This describes me to a "T". Guess I won't worry, since I figure "I am 'not alone'" :D

Definitely. Not. Alone.
And as of now, the only way I can get MY LIST OF ENDEAVORS onto my new platform is with OF iPhone pix-doubled.
A jailbroken iPad can be hacked so that omnifocus runs likevan iPad app. The date picker is very visually broken but works. Everything else seems to work.

Do you lose or risk anything substantial by jb'ing your iPad? If we weren't so (seemingly?) close to the real thing, I'd sure consider it.

I've resisted jailbreaking my iPhones over the years, & thought it would be too much trouble.

Even OF on non-jb iPad has some bugs for me (I.e. add item from safari bookmarklet)

thanks

Spiritjb.com works very well. Just checked, sadly 3.2.1 is not jailbreakable.

Jaikbreaking on current hardware is completely reversible. You can install software that causes problems and makes your device crash. I install very little.

Biggest issue is that you often have to wait to install updates.

Thanks, gopi. If I had it to do over, I would have jb'd right away.

I still think you should, but I do also think of owning root on your own devices as a moral imperative. I would use android if Apple wasn't so astoundingly good at polish, fit and finish.

maybe I have an outdated bookmarklet, but I think I reinstalled it a couple times.

If activating bookmarklet, I get a blank item name, and this display bug:

If I then rotate ipad to portrait, I just get a similarly broken portrait display.

(had to vnc into my imac to attach image, lol)

No new apps in productivity since midnight. Come on, app reviewers. You have the best GTD app on the market. Why aren't you more productive?

TC!! 2010-07-29 10:54 AM

Nope, they have the best GTD app not on the market!

ckeck 2010-07-29 12:08 PM

OH COME ON ALREADY @APPLE!

:p

Wasgo 2010-07-29 12:12 PM

My current theory in that the Apple employees have started using it in their workflow for approving other apps, and don't want to release it publicly because they're afraid that their Android competitors might start using it to make Android applications suck less.

wasting time checking app store
What Brian said is true for incremental updates (which is what we're used to), but with this new product launch OmniFocus for iPad won't be available for sale until we push a button from our end as well.

So, no, it won't go live on the App Store until we push that button, and when we do that we'll let everyone know.
perhaps omni could have been a little more clear on this point. apparently all those time any of us spent checking for the new app in the app store was a waste of time, since omni still had to "push the button" once apple approved the app. obviously omni does not have control over apple's review time. but for any of you compulsive app store lurkers, you've been wasting time.

Betsy 2010-07-29 12:41 PM

So true! I've cut my App Store checks to once or twice a day, down from once or twice an hour, since reading that. :p

Nah, I haven't been wasting any time — writing my shell script that checks for me might have been the most productive 10 minutes I've spent all week :)

Even if you are on Omni's notification email list, there's no guarantee that you're going to get the email within seconds of their sending it, either.

steven 2010-07-29 12:45 PM

Hey Palmer, are you able to add an item to OF iPad via bmark?

You tease us. [mutter-under-breath] sadists. [/m-u-b]

In the words of Dr. Forrester,

"Push the button, Frank"!!!

:)

gopi 2010-07-29 01:09 PM

Two more apps in Productivity were recently approved. That makes three approved apps today, one at midnight and two within the last hour or two...

propofol 2010-07-29 01:13 PM

Unless we know when they were submitted, I'm at a loss to understand how that helps?
Unless we know when they were submitted, I'm at a loss to understand how that helps?
It probably doesn't help. But a bunch of reviewed apps showing up might mean that OF is also there and awaiting the big red button.

propofol 2010-07-29 01:27 PM

Blog back up for posting...

It may have been "wasting time"......BUT.. part of it has been enjoyable - you know...that feeling of "anticipation" you get every time you stop for a quick "check" (and multiply that "feeling" several times over). Yeah..you crash and burn when you find it's not there... but, oh, that "anticipation" when you "first" begin!! :D:D
