Gmail permalinks -- hooray!

I discovered something fantastic about gmail the other day. I'm not sure how long this has been the case (I'm pretty sure it hasn't always been like this) -- when you are reading an email, either in the main interface or in a popup, the url in the location bar changes to a unique url that will always take you to that email message. This means that you can refer to this url from an OmniFocus task!

Now it's nice and easy to clear out my inbox and refer to todos from OmniFocus.

This is indeed great news.

I would really appreciate some good scripts to integrate omnifocus with gmail using this method.

Yeah, the process leaves a bit to be desired, but the outcome is worth it.

But a faster workflow would be great.

I noticed MailPlane does provide integration between gmail and omnifocu using permalinks. anybody has any experience with it?

your comment made me go and check out MailPlane, which I'd never seen before. It looks great!

I don't see any particular integration with OmniFocus, just the 'copy as mailplane url' item in the edit menu, which is indeed a tiny bit more elegant than the workflow from a browser.

Is this what you were referring to, or are there OmniFocus specific features?

Just found this and answered my own question:

1 - Create this bookmarklet:
javascript:window.location='x-omnifocus://newtask?name='+encodeURIComponent(document.title)+'&note='+encodeURIComponent(window.location+'\n\n')+encodeURIComponent(getSelection())+'&quickentry=0';
2 - Unzip the attached file

3 - Click on it the bookmarklet and when it asks which application do you want to use to open omnifocus:// choose the script "OmniFocus URI Handler" http://forums.omnigroup.com/showthread.php?t=8251

4 - Enable "Title tweaks" in gmail > options > labs so the title of the task it's cleaner

That looks interesting, deadsunrise, but I can't make it work. I thought I could create a bookmarklet just by dragging the code to the bookmarks bar, but doing that and clicking it just gives error messages in both Firefox and Safari.

Also, I am not sure I understood precisely what the bookmarklet does. Could you explain?

Looks like he's referring to this:
