MobileMe Calendars break iCal sync [See "replacing calendar sync" thread]

Just a heads up-- if you are thinking of upgrading to the MobileMe iCal beta, please be aware that...

- It converts your local calendars to subscribed calendars- which means Omnifocus won't be able to sync to them

- Only 10.6.4 Macs can sync to the calendars-- if you have any 10.5.8 machines they won't sync.

There is a downgrade option to revert back to you old calendar, thankfully.

I'm assuming that Apple will find a way to make the calendars accessible on older machine eventually.

Will Omnifocus support server-based calendars for syncing?

marisa8184 2010-08-01 03:31 AM

I have a 10.6.4 mac and mine won't sync either. This is a bit of a pain.

MartinVaughan 2010-08-06 05:17 AM

Ran into this myself. When I go to the iCal section of preferences, it does not show my most recent calendars and there's no way to "refresh" the calendar list.:(
Not that I really need this feature...but I'd like it to work!

Is that why none of my calendars show up on the left??

I've seen a couple of posts that have indicated that the MobileMe calendar beta breaks our ability to sync with iCal.

I haven't entered the beta, but other posters have indicated that you get out of the beta by pointing your web browser at https://www.me.com/calendar/downgrade/, if that helps...

Reverting iCal looses changes

Beware that I read if you revert back to your old iCal, any changes you made in Beta will be lost.

Too bad

I use all three version of OmniFocus. I also arrange each item that I know when exactly it has to be done on the calendars - iCal on Mac, MM calendar beta on iPhone 4 (future on iPad too).

Once the items are synced to iCal, they can be easily drag and drop as events, which is a much more efficient way than input all of them again.

It's a huge pain for OmniFocus users like me to know the iCal sync does not work. OmniGroup, please keep the pace with Apple and fix this problem, never let us down as always. Thanks.

iCal Sync issue

Not exactly same issue, just trying to fix a problem. I'm using Snow, I have 1.8 working, all in all things are great. When I go to OF Pref/iCal to sync, on the Calendars side it is not showing any of my active/current 3 calendars. On the Context side it does show all my contexts. The only thing showing on the Calendar side is: "(Unsynchronized)" Drag and drop from Context to the Calendar side is not working. All is updated and current. I'm open to ideas.

Are you in the MobileMe Calendar Beta or are your calendars server-based? If so, this thread may describe what's going on...

jchiar 2010-09-27 08:29 AM

Ditto on this for me. I use OF for Mac and iPhone.

Its not working for me and I DONT want to jump out of the Beta and loose my changes :(

Ken Case 2010-09-27 10:39 AM

Please send feedback on this issue to Apple: we built OmniFocus on top of Apple's SyncServices API (since OmniFocus runs on 10.4, and SyncServices is the only 10.4-compatible API for syncing with Mac calendars), and the MobileMe calendar beta is apparently not compatible with SyncServices.

At this point I don't know whether Apple is planning to fix this—and they might not know yet either. They might simply be waiting for customer feedback to see how many people care about this issue. (If someone has seen a statement from Apple on this, I'd appreciate a pointer!)

I have. On the mobileme beta page, there is a Feedback link.

Done thanks.

marisa8184 2010-10-15 02:49 AM

Is this resolved yet? I see that Mobileme's new calenar is now out of beta.

jchiar 2010-10-15 06:07 AM

No its not. Think OmniGroup may have to address.

Brian 2010-10-15 01:41 PM

Folks interested in this feature may want to contribute to Ken's What's the best replacement for calendar syncing? thread over in the OmniFocus forum.

Re-titling the thread to indicate that the MM calendars are now out of beta.

sync through gcal work-around

I suggest using google calendar to sync through ical.
1. create a gcal account
2. make a dedicated gcal for tasks
3. subscribe to the calendar via ical
4. in omnifocus go to prefs - ical
5. select the gcal you just created
6. in ical delete the old syncing calendar to kill the duplicates

seems to work so far

Thats one heck of a work around. To use another calendar service is out of the question for me.

Since mobileme is out of beta, i am hoping that OmniFocus gets updated.

I kinda like using calendars to view my scheduling.

Subscribed calendars do not show up in the omnifocus list

Brian 2010-11-29 05:19 PM

Clarifying from my earlier post... we don't have any additional work on this feature planned at this time, but my previous post includes a link to the thread where we're discussing what we should replace iCal sync with.

Closing this thread to redirect traffic to the other one...

Same Problem, No Mobile Me

I'm having the same problem described here - no calendars showing up in the Calendars list to sync to.

I don't have any MobileMe calendars - I have 3 CalDav subscriptions and 3 "On My Mac" calendars (which I'd figure would show up).

Anybody have any idea what's going on here?

Murphybp2 2010-12-28 03:26 PM

I'm having the same issue. When I go to the iCal preferences I don't see any calendars on the left hand side to sync up my contexts with. Don't know how to get them to show up either.

snpower 2011-01-05 05:11 AM

No iCal calendars available in OF 1.8

Screenshot should speak for itself. Thanks for help in advance.

CatOne 2011-01-05 08:31 AM

Are you using MobileMe? Did you upgrade to the new MobileMe calendars?

Because OmniFocus needs a LOCAL calendar to sync to. That is, one that iCal says is "On my Mac." Create one of those in iCal and it will probably be available.

Unsure how this should work -- if OF will need to be upgraded to store stuff in CalDAV-based MobileMe calendars (probably)… this will change how things sync as server-based calendars no longer "sync" using MobileMe… they are on the server so no true sync is necessary.

snpower 2011-01-05 11:43 AM

I am using Mobile Me and I did upgrade.

CatOne 2011-01-05 12:29 PM
I am using Mobile Me and I did upgrade.
That's the issue then. See my suggestions above about creating a local calendar.

unable to synchronize calendars (iCal)

I'm running OF 1.8.2. I'd been syncing certain contexts with a mail to do list, which is displayed in iCal, until I foolishly changed one of the tasks in iCal by moving the due date. The next sync with OF took several minutes and failed. I tried turning sync off, then on again, in OF, logging out the in, rebooting, changing calendars with whcih to sync, and finally, deleting all to dos in iCal. Nothing has allowed OF to sync again, and in fact, I now get the error message as soon as I try to access the iCal pref panel in OF.

I would be perfectly happy to simply reset the sync function and start from scratch but nothing I've done to date seems to help. Any assistance available would be mightily appreciated.

John
