Apple Mail integration

Ok - so I'm a week in using OmniFocus and I don't think I've ever been this excited about a non-media app. I mean - I'm <i>really</i> excited.

But I've just come to a horrifying realization. 75% of my "tasks" are started by emails I received or voicemail's I receive (as email attachments). I'm spending so much time copying mail contents to OF, then looking up the emails again to reply, that it's not an efficient system.

If I can't link between tasks and messages (and message threads), this isn't going to work. As labor intensive and fragile as it might be, I'd be better off with a hodgepodge system based on MailTags.

I know there must be some great mail and system wide integration planned, but I'm a little scared that it won't be enough. Can anyone from Omni detail what is on the drawing board?

have you seen the GTD plugin set for gmail? I find it a lot easier than MailTags. You have to give up your full text search of attachments though :-(

IIRC OmniDudes have said that Mail integration was going to be after 1.0.

Easy creation of actions from messages in Mail is planned for 1.0.

What we're planning is an "Add the current selection to OmniFocus" context-sensitive trigger which notices you're running Mail and runs an appropriate script which will grab the selected messages from Mail and make actions out of them.

The plan is that you can then add or customize additional scripts (and we'll provide several built-ins), so if you're running another app (e.g. OmniWeb) it will run the appropriate script for that app (e.g. one which grabs the current web page from OmniWeb).

Very cool.

Are you already playing with/thinking about 10.5 mail integration?

Something like this?

Thanks for the reply Ken!

Will there be a way to link back to the message from within OmniFocus?

This way a conversational thread can be reviewed and a reply can be added to it. MailActOn currently has a great system for creating events and to-dos in iCal that can reference back to the original message. This kind of integration would be extremely valuable to me. I suspect I'm not alone on that.

Ken, after adding a tesk from a mail message, will you be able to link back to the mail message from within OF?
