Selecting one object behind another object

(Newbie question warning!)

I often find myself frustrated that I can't easily select one object that's located behind another, and I'm wondering if there's an easy technique that I'm missing.

For example: suppose I first draw a small circle, and then I draw a larger unfilled square that completely surrounds the circle. When I click on the circle, I'm actually selecting the square, because the square is in front and the circle in back.

Here are the techniques I've discovered, but they are all something of a hassle:
* Reordering the objects when I want to select something other than the top.
* Put the objects in different layers, and hide or lock the top layer.
* Use the outline utility to select the desired object.
* Drag the mouse to select all objects in an area, and then deselect all but the desired object by shift-clicking.

I would love to be able to, for example, hold down some key combination while I click to cycle through all overlapping objects. Is there some method like that or something else I that I should try?

Thanks!

If the object has no fill, there's a preference setting to allow clicking through it in the General preference pane.

If not, using the Layer List is the best option.
