I want my money back!

I am sorry, but I am having some really disturbing problems with OmniWeb 5.5.4 (v607.17). I bought it two weeks ago (as version 5.5.3) and I should say that I am not impressed with its speed and the amount of time it takes to load well known, fast Web Sites, such as Digg.com and Slashdot. I tested this against FireFox 2.0.1. I have Excite as my home page for over 8 years now and that is my starting point to a lot of my favourite links. I have Excite as my starting page on both OmniWeb and FireFox. I click on a link to Digg and wait, and wait, and wait... Then I launch FireFox and click on the same link and have Digg open instantly! The BIG difference is that FF did not cost me a penny! And it works as I expect. My Internet connection is nothing to sneeze at either: I have a 5 mbps DSL connection. I don't undestan why OW takes soooo long to load a Site when it should really be as fast or FASTER than FF. I use it on my MacBook Pro, 2.16 GHz, 2 GB-RAM. Not a slow machine by any means... Even now, as I preview this post it is glacially slow...

For that reason, please, I want my money back. It was very easy for me to purchase OW, so I am assuming it should be equally easy for you guys to credit my money back to my credit card. Thanks. Maybe some other time, when this is resolved.

MacStansbury 2007-02-19 04:52 PM

Are you sure understand the sometimes glacial speed of Digg? It's notorious for being ridiculously slow at times, even to the point it's almost a joke (just ask the reddit crowd). I just loaded Digg in OmniWeb and Firefox 2.0.0.1 on my old G5, and Firefox loaded slower.

Right now there's at least 12 javascripts on the homepage, and that tends to slow down any WebKit browser. It gets worse over time, so leaving your browser on for days tends to bog it down in Safari or OmniWeb. It's truly horrible in Safari, though, and the OmniWeb team's made great strides in making it better than Apple's native browser.

That said, I think you're describing the same behavior you get when you've had your browser open for a while (days) combined with the slowness that is Digg.

cpcabral 2007-02-19 05:15 PM

Not correct

I do not leave my browser open for days. I close it whener I finish a browsing section. And Digg has never been slow on any other browser, including Safari. I see this is going nowhere as to getting my money back... :(

Sorry that you're having problems. For me, OW is much faster than FF and does not crash nearly as often. I realize that some users are having issues. Perhaps you can find a solution.

As to getting your money back, why would anyone on a discussion forum be able to help you? You need to contact OmniGroup.

In future I suggest that you try using demo versions of software before making a purchase.

Contact OmniGroup directly via the Help>Send Feedback menu option.

FWIW, this is likely another example of the Javascript garbage collection bug in the version of WebKit that OmniWeb is currently using and should (hopefully) be resolved in the 5.6 release when it finally arrives.

I just had no idea where to start. I thought the discussion groups would be a starting point. Obviously, the people around here, like to think that if you don't do what they know it is right, then you must be stupid! Sorry I have offended your intelligence by reporting my problem and asking the question. I will not do that again, ever, since I will be unistalling this idiotic piece of software as soon as I finish this post.

Right...
In future I suggest that you try using demo versions of software before making a purchase.
In the future, I suggest you keep your smart replies to yourself. That does not help me and I am sick and tired of useless replies like these. Adios!

bazokajoe_2k 2007-02-20 06:31 AM

1. Just like to mention his attitude does not reflect those of all Canadians

2. Just like to mention that no replies in this thread were useless. I can't give you your money back. Neither can most people here. Thus, they were just attempting to figure out -why- it's running so slow on your computer. The knowledge of these things really does help devs fix problems.

3. Just want to mention that I hardly doubt it was a smart reply. Did you try the demo? If not, it might be a good idea for future products, I've had several occasions that software does not work on my machine as suggested by the developers, and using a demo first saved me a lot of money.

4. Lastly, I'm sorry that OmniWeb didn't work out for you. It's unfortunate that there are still some bugs that seem to completely ruin the experience for some users. I would invite you try the browser out again when it hits 5.6 to see if the newer, updated version of WebKit fixes your problem.

Mine was a serious reply, one which I hope you will listen to so that you do not "waste" money on software in future.

Seriously, always try out a demo first before you buy.

And as everyone has said, moaning here wont get you any money back. You need to contact OmniGroup.

Thank you

Thanks to all who replied and I am sorry I was too rough around the edges on my posts here. That was just out of pure frustration with that borwser. I have already contacted the Omni Group and received an e-mail from a machine, with a promise that an actual human being was going to look into my issue and reply to me shortly, although they did not define what "shortly" means.

Thanks again.

JKT 2007-02-20 01:12 PM

sales@omnigroup.com

You might want to try contacting the sales arm directly.

FWIW, I don't use digg (or /. any more) but it is quite conceivable that this is not typical behaviour for the browser. The rendering engine is WebKit so it should be just as fast as Safari (however, the version of WebKit that OmniWeb is currently based upon is a later version than that in the official Safari release - it is possible that a regression is causing slower page loading, or it is the JS garbage collection bug that is known about).

I am neither offended nor do I think that anyone is "stupid" for posting an honest inquiry. Seems like the original tone of your message was that forum members should be helping you to get your money back. Thus my reply. Advice offered was well intended, I believe.

Hope you can get OmniWeb working properly because it's very decent browser.

Forrest 2007-02-20 09:27 PM

bazokajoe_2k summed it up pretty well, but I'll add a couple things.

1. If you're looking for a refund as your thread title states, the forum users can't give you that. I don't have access to Omni's ecom system any more than you do.

2. If you are looking for help with OW, it's not the best idea to title your thread "I want my money back'

cpcabral 2007-02-21 11:40 AM

It's over, folks!

I thought I already had axplained why I came to this forum with my issue, i.e. I had no idea where to start. Also, I thought I had already apologised for my frustrated (and perhaps raspy) behaviour around here, but it seems like some people just won't let it go...

Nonetheless, I am no longer interested in OW and BTW, why shouldn't I, or anybody else for that matter, start a thread by saying "I want my money back"? What is this? Some kind of OW zealots' group that no longer can accept the fact that some people might not actually like what the Omini Group sells? I came here as a dissatisfied customer. I made a mistake, it is quite obvious for me now and, for that, I have already apologised.

Having said that, I don't really care what you guys think of me or of Canadians in general, like a fellow countryman made the point of saying in this thread that "not all Canadians share the same attitude" or something like that. This is called "freedom of expression" and I can start a thread any way I damn well want!

Really, I mean, as far as I am concerned, this whole OmniWeb crappy browser issue is water under the bridge. I am done and over with it. Lesson learned: I will NEVER, EVER AGAIN, buy software from some startup company based on false advertising. Enough said. And I will not come back and check for any replies to this either. So, go wild and bash me for all I care!

Hi-

I'm sorry we haven't responded sooner. This was a 3 day weekend for us and our main OmniWeb support guy is out of the office so we're still playing catchup. I have just responded to your email and your refund will be process today. I apologize for the frustration you've experienced.

Don't forget that patience might pay off here. After all, OW5.6 is on its way, and your upgrade is free.

That said, I'm using Safari often these days (as I am now) because OW uses up too much CPU. Nevertheless, I want to support this browser because its success benefits me.

I used to be one of the people who was regularly filing bug reports for Firefox, Mozilla, etc., back when it was a piece of crap, unstable browser. Well, lo and behold what became of Firefox. So, don't think this is all for naught. Be patient. Just as we successfully pushed Microsoft out of the Mac browser market, we will probably force all the other browsers to improve, as well.

Omnigroup is not a startup. It's a small company, and if it weren't for small companies and free projects like Firefox, ALL you would have would be crappy software. Supporting Omnigroup is really a matter of putting your money where your mouth is.

mija 2007-03-03 06:49 AM
Hmmm. so Omniweb is a known issue? How does it compare to Safari and Camino?
Omniweb is vastly superior to both in features. It is also undergoing fairly heavy development, so it comes with all the baggage that development carries with it. OW 5.6, which I REALLY hope will be out soon, should the most severe bugs fixed.

Based on features alone, OW is by far the best browser for the Mac. Safari and Camino don't really compare. In fact, OW sports a more recent release of Apple's webkit, so it's a more advanced browser in every way.

I was hanging around in Opera community with Opera for OS X browser since I am also customer (from old times) and surprised (!) to see there are people reporting problems , SAME problems with exact SAME sites named digg.com and youtube.com

I searched Mozilla a bit and found there are issues , near SAME issues on Mozilla (gecko) based browsers too.

So either 3 seperate, entirely seperate browser cores and their authors make same exact mistakes or those sites doesn't deserve to be World's most visited (top 100) sites with that kind of horrible code.

Of course no browser developer is mad to call their code "stupid" openly as they have fanatics ready to bite. Also "customer (end user) is always right". They will sit silently and tweak browsers to workaround that horrible code and the isssues will be solved.

I come back and try OW every couple of months to see if its worth paying for yet, and frankly I'm amazed that anybody has paid anything over for this so far.

It still has as many, if not more, problems as any free alternatives out there. The general attitude on this board still stinks as well. I'll guess I'll just have to stick to what I've got and try again in a few more months....

Except that the programme doesn't have that many problems, does it? Some of us like it enough to have paid for it already. The 'general attitude on this board' is surely reflected by the first two sentences.

sgmiller 2007-03-28 02:15 PM

For the record

I just tried loading DIGG and compared the loading time to both FF and Safari. While this isn't exactly scientific, maybe OW was a tad slower but certainly not enough to flip out about. ost of the time, OW seems faster to me.

Is it possible that DIGG was cached when it opened "instantly.?"

So go away and let the adults get on with their business. Me? I'm gonna call Steve Jobs and read him the riot act for putting together that other startup, Apple.

A forum record?

Is there a record for the number of replies or views of a thread? I mean 2,345 views is huge compared to everything else.

By the way, I use OmniWeb on a old 2x 867 Mhz G4 MDD, 1.5 GB RAM and it works great.

Ilgaz 2007-04-09 01:01 AM

It shows up in forums front page with single link :) I am glad Omni group is not a new company since it is awful for a companies forums having "I want my money back" at front page :D

Now it will be problem to remove the topic since all people replied to it.

Perhaps we should start a new thread "I want to pay more! How can I do it?" and post record number of replies to save company image?

Sad thing is, I just replied making sure it will appear on front page... Argh..
I just had no idea where to start. I thought the discussion groups would be a starting point. . . .
This is such an insincere statement that it is irrefutable proof that the poster's intentions were malicious. "I just had no idea where to start." Really, no one could be so stupid as not to know how to send an email to a company from whom they purchased software, in order to inquire about problems with its use and/or about a refund.

Rather, it is clear that the true motive was a crude attempt to publicly smear the company's product in a forum provided by the company for genuine support issues, and of course it backfired because it was so easy to see that the post was nothing more than a petulant temper tantrum by a rude nitwit.
