OmniWeb crashes after every updates ...
 

After every updates OmniWeb crashes ...

To get it to work correctly then, I have to remove the preferences file.

But if I do that, I loose all the Omniweb settings, sites settings, personnal search settings and adblocking rules !

So it is really really becoming boring !

Plus it happens in both US only and international versions.
When there are updates for other softwares, you don't have to erase every time a new one comes out the pref file ...

I will not spend my time to setup again after every updates, so I keep the 5.5.1 that which is the last update that didn't crashed after it is released without having to delete the pref file.

I've never had this issue. Do you have any haxies installed?

I have :

iGlasses, CaminoSession, GrowlCamino, UnifiCamino, but none of this is irsponsible, since at my work I have a CoreDuo iMac and none of this is installed and it crashes also anyaway.

So if you were to revert back to an older version, what happens?

If I remove the complete folders QuickTime, InputManagers, Internet Plug-Ins, Frameworks from the Library folder, it crashes anyway. So nothing of what I wrote before shloud be responsible too.

When I revert to 5.5.1, it always works OK.

It doesn't crashes right after being launched, but always after around 30 s ~1 mn. And it is systematically.

Do you have bookmark syncing enabled?

Bookmark syncing is disabled.

Publishing bookmarks on a local network is enabled.

EDIT : I tried when disabling the share on a local network, but crashes anyway.

I totally have to vouch for this. I've been using OmniWeb since 5.5.1, and EVERY SINGLE RELEASE that I've tried, beta or stable, has been notorious for having that f***ing CrashCatcher pop up. Half the times that damn thing has popped up when OmniWeb hasn't crashed, but I'm really sick of OmniWeb ALWAYS CRASHING.

Do you have any of the same plugins 'n stuff as the original poster?

If you create a new user and run OW there, does it have the same issue?

Note, simply moving the Input Managers folder is not enough - they stay loaded until you log out and back in or restart. Did you do that when testing to see if they were the cause? This could also be the case for the Quicktime Plugins.

Yes i tried both to be sure.

The only way is to delete the pref file.

OK. If you look back at your crash reporter e-mails to OmniGroup, do they always crash in the same/similar thread? (Check the content of the thread rather than its number).

Did you try Forrest's suggestion - create a new user account and see if it happens there? If it still does, does it still happen in that new user account if you perform a safe log-in (hold the shift key down while clicking the button to log-in and keep it down until the desktop appears). This will clear a number of caches and disable third-party plug-ins etc.

If I restart with all the extensions deactivated, it crashes still.

If I create a new user, it doesn't with/without exntions deactivated with the same pref file.

Odd, but there is evidently something causing the crash in your normal account. Try manually deleting the OmniWeb cache files ([B]~/Library/Caches/com.omnigroup.OmniWeb5[/B] and [B]~/Library/Caches/OmniWeb[/B]) in your normal account and see if that helps.

Alternatively, do you have any third party fonts installed in your ~/Library/Fonts folder? Perhaps there is a font causing problems?

Well i have no fonts installed in my personnal library folder, they are in the general library folder.

After having deleted the caches with Onyx, no change after restart, still crashing.

Something is sure, the frameworks, InputManagers, internet plug-ins and QuickTime plug-ins are not responsible too since they are located in the general library folder and OmniWeb didn't crash in a new user accounts that loaded all of them.

I don't see where it can come from ...

Are you sure OnyX cleared the OmniWeb caches? As far as I recall, it only does the system and Safari ones. Check that the OmniWeb ones have been cleared in the Finder.

Other things to check - do you have any Contextual Menu Items installed in your user account Library?

Well I have manually removed the cashed, logged out/in and no changes.

When you say you've deleted the preferences file, do you mean the com.omnigroup.OmniWeb5.plist from ~/Library/Preferences and that is it, or have you also tried deleting the various History.XXXXX files from ~/Library/Application Support/OmniWeb 5 folder?

It worked for a time, then i leaved, when i relaunched it started again to crash, so i repeat to erase everything, but nothing to do still crashing. So back 5.5.1

OW has been crashing on me a lot lately. I've sent in, literally, like 20 reports in the past week or so.

If you'd like some help figuring out what's going with these crashes, we'd be more than happy to lend a hand.

If you wouldn't mind selecting from the OmniWeb menu: Help > Send Feedback, and refreshing our memory as to what's going on, I think we can sort this out. :)

The reason I ask for you to contact us this way is because we may need to collect a couple files.

I'm not an expert in any way, but reading all these posts on these forums and on the Nisus forum, about people who are having continual crashes with software which has been completely stable for me for long, long periods, has made me think about it. The problem has more been with NWE, which when I have had one crash, although the system apparently continues to run fine as do all other apps, NWE has then had a tendency to be unstable and crash again ... until I reboot my computer.
So I've been wondering: are those who suffer from repeated crashing the people who leave their computers running 24/7 for long, long periods, only restarting when some system upgrade requires it? When an app crashes, does it leave behind somewhere in the system bits of code that aren't deleted when the crash happens and these continue to affect the stability of that app, but that shutting down and restarting removes any of those bits of code from the disk in the usual shut down clean-up procedure?
I have used a laptop for the last 5 years or so, it goes with me most places, and I shut it down when I move, rather than just putting it to sleep; and apps which crash on others have been notably stable for me ... it has made me wonder.

But it is not the problem, if you read well again the thread, the problems only happens when you update from 5.5.2 to 5.5.4. I have no problem with 5.5.1, it almost never crashes for me. And I can restard or shutdown 5 times in a day, it will not change anything. It crashes on my MacBook Pro, even when it was all brand new OmniWeb updates crashed. At work, my iMac is shutdown everyday before I leave, and so I have activated the cleaning tasks to operate on lunch time, but OmniWeb updates crash too on this computer. Even on my iMac G5 it happens ...
So I think, since the 5.5.2 update there is something new inside the code that makes it crashing sometimes.

Well, it was just a guess ... I find it very odd ... I had a crash with 5.5.3 on the 9th January due to typing in the address bar while a page was loading, which I seem to remember reading was a known problem ... my previous crash was on September 9th last year 5.5.1 for the same or very similar reason, and then with one of the betas of 5.5 on 27th July which crashed regularly when the internet connection dropped.
I used to find that apps which updated through Sparkle (e.g. Adium and Tables) would crash immediately after an update if I didn't shut them down again myself and then re-open them, but even that hasn't happened for a month or so.

I made another try with 5.5.3.
I was looking a vidéo on Apple. Then CrashCatcher launched up for nothing since Omniweb didn't crashed, the video was still playing in back ground with no problem !!! I have been able to watch the full video before clicking Quit in CrashCatcher !!

I think CrashCatcher always start for nothing most of the time ! And there is no way to disable it ...

This is a consequence of OmniWeb being multi-threaded - sometimes one of the threads will crash (and hence CrashCatcher will launch), but it doesn't affect the front-most window or the whole app. Therefore, it seems that OmniWeb hasn't crashed, whereas it actually has (for example if you try to continue browsing, it will eventually lock up completely or crash completely).

In general, when OmniWeb crashes like this with the CrashCatcher in front, OmniWeb remains plainly usable, if you have a text field, you can continue to fill in, or browse a page, but, if you valid the CrashCatcher, then OmniWeb stops and leaves ...
And it is what happen in this thread all the time, that's why it is boring, because the browser looks to work.

It remains usable for the front-most window, but if you try to access other tabs or click links to open other sites, it will [I]typically[/I] freeze or crash outright. The reason being that the thread which initially crashed and caused CrashCatcher to launch was one that a background tab or window instigated, not the tab/window you are currently in.
