OmniFocus v1.1.4 for iPhone release notes

OmniFocus v1.1 - released October 31, 2008

The new Bonjour sync method supports syncing directly with a Mac over a local Wi-Fi network. (MobileMe and WebDAV are still available as syncing alternatives, but are no longer required.)

When you open OmniFocus, the New Inbox Item button is available immediately. (You no longer have to wait for the database to finish loading!)

Improved the interface for selecting start and due dates.

The Due Soon, Overdue, and Flagged lists now include inbox items.

OmniFocus is now available in Japanese. (Look for several more languages soon, including French, German, Spanish, Italian, Simplified Chinese, and Dutch.) If your iPhone's language isn't English or Japanese but you prefer English to Japanese, make sure you enable the English keyboard in your iPhone's international settings.

Further improved stability, performance, memory usage, and interface polish.

Here's a step-by-step guide to setting up Bonjour sync between an iPhone (or iPod touch) and a Mac.

First, some troubleshooting steps / prerequisites:

1) Make sure your Mac and iPhone can reach each other through Bonjour. The easiest way to do this is to ensure that they're both on the same Wi-Fi network (possibly by setting up an AdHoc Wi-Fi network on your Mac).

2) Make sure no firewall rules are blocking network traffic between your iPhone and your Mac. (If things don't seem to be working, try turning off the firewall temporarily.)

3) Make sure you have OmniFocus v1.5 for Mac installed. You can download OmniFocus v1.5 from <http://www.omnigroup.com/applications/omnifocus/download/>.

Here are steps for setting up Bonjour sync on completely new installations of both OmniFocus for Mac and for iPhone:

On the Mac:

1) Launch OmniFocus v1.5 for Mac.

2) Open Preferences, and click on Sync to switch to Synchronization Preferences.

3) Click on the "Sync with: Bonjour" setting.

4) Click on "Keep the sync database on this Mac", and enter a password (such as "123456").

5) Click on the "Share Settings" button to temporarily broadcast these sync settings over Bonjour.

On the iPhone:

1) Launch OmniFocus.

2a) If this is the first time you've used OmniFocus on this iPhone, you'll see a prompt asking if you'd like to "Set Up Sync". Touch "Set Up Sync" to proceed to the Sync with Mac screen.

or 2b) If this is not the first time you've used OmniFocus on this iPhone, click Settings, then scroll down to Synchronization and touch "Get Settings from Mac" to proceed to the Sync with Mac screen.

3) On the "Sync with Mac" screen, you should see an entry for the settings you shared in step 5 of the Mac setup process, e.g. "Ken Case@my-mac". If not, double-check that the "Share Settings" button is still depressed on your Mac, and if it isn't click on it again. If it is still depressed on your Mac and you're still not seeing an entry on your iPhone, then you probably don't have Bonjour connectivity between the two; double-check the troubleshooting / prerequisites section above to make sure your Mac and iPhone are both on the same Wi-Fi network.

4) Click on the shared settings, and enter the server password (such as "123456") to proceed to sync.

Hope this helps!

Changes in the minor v1.1.3 update (released November 20, 2008):

OmniFocus is now able to repair disconnected root transactions (rather than simply reporting "no root can reach all tail transactions").
When syncing over Bonjour, all database compactions are now performed by the server. This is more efficient—and, more importantly, this eliminates the possibility that overlapping compact operations could leave a disconnected root transaction in the sync database (causing the above error).
