10.5.2 freezes - OmniGraffle connection?
 

My MacBook Pro running 10.5.2 is freezing periodically - spinning colour wheel and no response to the keyboard or mouse clicks, although the mouse will move the cursor on screen. Only solution I've found is to reboot. Looks like it might be a graphics glitch, and I suspect an OS/graphics driver bug - system log repeatedly reports:

around the time of the freeze. This has only happened when connected to an external monitor.

In each case when this has happened, I've been running OmniGraffle (Pro 5) - certainly not enough evidence to suggest a causal relationship, but the two freezes today occurred (1) right after launching OG, and (2) while editing in OG. That said, there are plenty of other apps that were also running on both occasions.

I wonder, has anyone else had this problem with 10.5.2, with or without OmniGraffle running?

I've only had it happen twice so far, but I've just started using OmniGraffle. Both times that it occurred, I was using Graffle at the time and experienced the exact same set of circumstances you mention. My 2 events happened about a week apart, and during the intervening time I had no problems though I use the laptop heavily. Also, I see the same thing in the system log:

The last 2 lines repeat about 40 times until I power-cycled the laptop. Perhaps it's time to figure out how to submit a trouble ticket to Omni?

We're aware of this issue, but it's very helpful to get every report we can.

Yes, we've had a few reports of this problem so far. We're still trying to figure out what's going on and what's causing it, so if you're running into the problem, we'd love to hear from you—especially if you can provide any console log messages, a system profiler report, a description of your system, or the like. It seems to mostly happen to people with Macbook Pros, often with dual displays, but isn't associated with any particular activity in OmniGraffle. It's interesting that both of you got error messages about an NVidia "graphics channel exception".

For what it's worth, you might be able to avoid rebooting if you ssh into the machine and kill the window server. (Just killing OmniGraffle isn't enough; the window server itself has gotten stuck by that point.) If this works for you, let us know... we're having a hard time getting this crash to happen to [i]us[/i] so we can investigate it.

Microsoft has had complaints about this regarding Excel. They stated that Apple confirmed it is a bug on their side. Hopefully Apple will fix it soon.

I did try to do this when I first encountered this bug, but I wasn't able to ssh in (got no response). I haven't tried opening the ssh connection before using graffle - I'll try that next!

Stability is my main concern right now. OG 5 freezes a lot when trying o save my files. and it seems not to play nice what ever happened to protected memory. when OG5 goes down it brings my entire computer to a standstill. Already this morning I have had to power off my computer, power it back on the restart it to get it back to a happy state. Once is bad but I have had to do it 4 times this morning and its just now 11 am. Talk about frustrating. I have a few other features I would like to see like being able to create a stencil / object with multiple states such as a check box, that is the one huge advantage Visio has.

But the number one priority needs to be an application that I can actually use. I thought it was my computer that was the problem so I sent it back to our tech guys to have them fix it they gave me a brand new out of the box macbook pro straight out of the box to my desk and it happens on this computer also.

Doing user experience an application like OG is my primary tool so I spend hours a day working in it and need it to work crashing once a week is to much once an hour is unusable.

is this issue addressed in this release?

All indications are that the bug being discussed in this thread is in the drivers for Nvidia graphics cards - it's not something we can fix in our code, unfortunately.

Oh boy, this is bad. I'm getting exactly the same problem, with this appearing in the syslog a million times:

Is there any way to prevent this from happening? Do you have any contact with Apple? Are they working on new drivers? This is very frustrating as I basically can't use OmniGraffle reliably -- and I just upgraded to it today for $70+ bucks =(.
