Frequent crashes in test builds starting with r200159 [fixed in r200449]

This morning I received the alert to upgrade to 200145. Did that and immediately got an alert for upgrade to 200159, which I did. 200159 crashes continually almost as soon as I click on a link to another page within a tab.

Window has tabs for APOD, Literature & Latte forums, Nisus forums, Scribblecode forums, OmniGroup forums and Google search page. Scribblecode forums and Google not tested, but crashes on all the other forums. APOD can scroll, but didn’t try to click a link.

Now retrograded to 200145; so far so good, though all I’ve tried so far is OmniGroup > OmniWeb > Omniweb General > 64-bit test builds … down to this point.

I have the same problem with the mentioned build. It just crashes as soon as i try to load a page using the address bar.

I have no crashing problems with the older builds.

My Mac:
iMac early 2009, base model.

This should be fixed in r200160 and later.

Latest build 200169 crashed on opening.

Hmm, does it consistently crash for you? (If you sent in a crash report, could you let me know the ticket number?) I'm posting this from r200169 right now, and it's seeming relatively stable—though there are still some crashes that I haven't gotten to the bottom of yet, and maybe it has to do with my preferences.

I just checked and it crashed again on the same location - the NY Times home page. This second time, about ten minutes after accessing the site, I had clicked on a video in order to open it . The first time it had crashed immediately upon accessing the site. The first crash report was OG #1004154 and the more recent OG #1004215. Both were sent by e-mail. Thanks for your continuing efforts on our favorite browser.

Crashed again on Washington Post home page: OG #1004231 Error report sent via e-mail.

Today's Revision 200205 crashed immediately upon accessing NY Times web page. OG #1004815 sent via e-mail.

I think that crash should be fixed in r200290.

I'm afraid not. I tried it and it crashed again on the NYT site. OG #1005185 sent by e-mail. I didn't try the subsequent build, just 200290. BTW, I noticed the time date on those two builds. Don't think we're taking for granted all the extra time and hard work you're putting in on this. When OW 6 finally reaches stability and perfection, and it's announced on all the usual sites, I hope you'll at least make it Donationware.

Well, the good news is that it looks like this crash is in a different place. The bad news is that it's harder to tell what's going on in this new place. Hmm…

Ken Case 2013-12-10 10:32 AM

OK, the latest build (r200322) doesn't actually fix the crash, but I'm hoping this change will make it easier to track down:
Updated crash reports to include the last few seconds of information from the OmniWeb error log, since those details might include a vital clue as to why OmniWeb crashed. (Note: as always, you can review and edit your crash details before sending in the report.) You can turn off this reporting by turning off the “Copy log to crash reports” checkbox in the Error Log window.
I think the most common issue may finally be fixed in r200401. Give it a spin and let me know!

Well, OW didn't crash but it wouldn't reload, and clicking bookmarked links resulted in the correct address in the address bar but no loads of the actual sites. I flushed the cache and checked all my settings for anything out of the ordinary but didn't find anything to indicate the problem was on my end. Can you replicate my experience?

Does anything interesting appear in your Error Log (under the Window menu) when this happens?

(Hard to know since I haven't been able to reproduce the problem reliably, but I did see something suspicious and reviewed the code and think I may have fixed this for r200411.)

Here’s what I retrieved from the last session:

2013-12-11 12:06:24 OSULastRunStartInterval default is non-nil; unless you forcibly killed the app and restarted it it should be nil at launch time.

There’s no 200411 in the builds. Did you mean 410 or 415?

Sorry, I meant the r200415 build.

Same problem here. I got an "automatic update" this morning, and OW crashed immediately. I tried downgrading to one of last week's previous versions, but no luck. Tonight's latest build (OmniWeb-6-r200415-Test.dmg) does not work either. OW crashes immediately after starting.

If there's any information I can contribute to help track down the problem, please let me know - feedback via mail unfortunately does not work for me.

Is there any way I can get some crash information on the console, so that I can pass this on?

200415 didn't crash on opening for me, but it still crashes at random when clicking links to random sites. My crash reports: OG #1006200 and OG #1006202. The problem now is that there are no longer any versions visible on the download site that work. I think 200145 was the last that was reasonably stable.

Ken Case 2013-12-11 07:56 PM

From the other thread, it sounds like everyone is having much better luck with r200449—yes?

mbert 2013-12-11 09:24 PM

No, r200449 crashes at startup, too. As already mentioned, I currently havent't got a single version that I can use, all that are visible in the download area crash immediately.

mbert 2013-12-11 10:58 PM

Correcting myself, I had been referring to the previous version, r200449 works for me. Thank you!

mbert 2013-12-12 03:35 AM

Another update after half a day: 3 more crashes though the app is in principle usable. However google mail does not work - when clicking on an entry, it displays "loading" indefinitely and never loads a mail.

jwthomas 2013-12-12 02:10 PM

I’m having good luck with the latest build, 200517. No crashes on my favorite sites, embedded videos play with no problems. GMail has glitches but you can lessen them considerably by switching to Basic HTML mode. Google has changed the site to allow automatic opening of images so perhaps some special attention is needed there. Still no plugins. I’m making OW my default browser in order to give this build a thorough run through. Thanks as always to Ken!

AlanBDahl 2014-03-31 09:17 PM

I’ve found that flushing your cache each time you upgrade your test build increases stability. Doing it now and then for no reason isn’t a bad idea either. That said I’ve rarely seen a test build that doesn’t crash at least occasionally.
