OmniWeb 5.11 Sneaky Peeks

Up now at:

Includes an updated version of WebKit, and fixes a long standing regression that was preventing bookmark syncing and checking to work over HTTPS.

Based on limited testing it appears that 622.15.0.142076 doesn't honor the custom style sheet preference (globally or site preferences).

troyb 2010-12-09 10:37 AM

Correct, we are looking into this issue.

Great work! Have used OmniWeb since 2006. Still my default browser of choice. Love its real Apple feel, reliability and its bookmarking.

Thanks again

Has there been any progress with tracking down this issue? Chance of a fix before chrissy?

Flash video playback also appears broken from Vimeo at least. Audio plays, but video is noise or random pixels.

Example video embedded here: http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/badastronomy/2010/12/23/some-bad-science-can-make-you-laugh-and-some-kills/

OW 622.15.0.142632
Flash 10.1.102.64

Playback in Safari is fine.

Hmmm... OW works fine for me for the blog you mentioned above.

troyb 2010-12-27 01:31 PM

Axxel, yes that sounds like something going on with Flash -- OmniWeb hands all that stuff off to the flash plug-in in one package so it's going to be all or nothing basically.

As for the stylesheet issues that some people are noticing. Sorry for the delay. This is at the top of our list to fix.

Axxel 2010-12-27 08:14 PM

Troy, actually I was too quick to blame Flash. It appears for that video Vimeo attempts to stream something for Quicktime. The Perian 1.2.1 component messes up the playback.

Obviously, disabling Perian is an option. What's not clear is why OmniWeb would be selecting a different playback component than Safari. Any ideas?

troyb 2010-12-27 09:20 PM

Hmmm, not sure. If you do disable Perian, what kind of video are you served? The html5 version or Flash version?

Axxel 2010-12-29 11:47 PM

Disabling Perian gets me the HTML 5 version (no Flash) in both OW and Safari. What I haven't been able to figure out is if the served file is the same.

Its possible the problem is in their detection JavaScript, but I have set a site preference for vimeo.com for OW to use a Safari user agent. I assume that would apply to the loaded iframe?

troyb 2011-01-04 04:48 PM

Hi Axxel, did you have any luck with any of this? If you've set a site preference for vimeo, that should also apply to the iframe on that page.

Axxel 2011-01-05 07:02 AM

Yes, I found a workaround, though the underlying issue is unexplained.

If I set a site preference for vimeo.com to identify as Safari 4, the iframe video plays back in Flash (confirmed with the context menu containing Flash related menu items).

On the other hand, a site preference for Vimeo identifying as OmniWeb or Safari 5 results in what appears to be HTML 5 video. In that case OmniWeb still selects the Perian as the codec instead of whatever Safari 5 uses. Still not clear why that would occur.

Still have this weird problem with Tab selection/focus where a link is command clicked or a link that opens a new tab. The current Tab focus jumps to a Tab at the bottom of the list. The original viewed Tab has a blue border but the second last Tab in the list is fully blue indicating it as the Tab selected and currently viewed.

Driving me nuts, because the last sneakypeak broke the stylesheets and the official build render some pages with massive problems.

troyb 2011-02-04 09:28 AM

Do you have an example page that is causing this? It sounds like javascript is being run on the page causing something the to happen.

dave_m 2011-02-04 09:38 AM

By the way, stylesheets should be working again in the latest SPs.

Zippie76 2011-02-04 01:15 PM

thanks...

thanks, that helped me a lot!

chantal

Sorry, took so long to report back on this.

The 5.11 sneakypeek download seems to be expired. I can't download it anymore. Is a new build ready?

I am hoping for some interesting updates in the future. Mac OS X v10.7 preview now uses WebKit2. I hope we see OmniWeb using this framework too in the near future.
Still using OmniWeb as my main browser!

Acid 3 and Speed

I just downloaded the latest OW.
I have been testing Browsers for a week.
Chrome and Firefox can't pass Acid 3!!!
I also ran it through my local broadband speed test.
Once again OW won out even over Safari!
Great Work
Keep it Coming.
I would like to see OW with extensions....
