Hello,

First of all I want to compliment you guys on an awesome desktop GTD application. I just started using it yesterday, it took me about 3 hours to transfer all my text list based GTD info to Omingroup.

Today I purchased the iPhone application. I set up WebDAV on my server and I am able to upload my info to the server. Once this is done, I see a folder called "OmniFocus.ofocus" in my WebDAV folder which contains about 4 MB of zip files. My backup files are a bit over 6 MB. When I click "Sync" again on my desktop app it pops up the following dialog box:

[B]Your database couldn't be synchronized, because the copy on the server has been reverted since the last sync.[/B]

[I]This was most likely caused by restoring from a database backup. Which copy of the database would you like to use? The other database will be saved in your database backup folder.[/I]

Of course I tell it to "Use Local Copy" and then it uploads it again. Then when I click "Sync" the same thing happens again.

Now when I sync my iphone it just gets about 44 items in the Inbox and nothing else.

Any ideas on this one?

Ok a bit more info. In my server logs I am seeing this:

That repeats a whole bunch of times during the sync.

I'm running Apache 2.2 on FreeBSD.

It looks like the folder on my server has 1608 files in it, whereas the folder when I Sync to disk has 1667 files.

Any idea on this one?

When you say "upload my info to the server" do you mean the first OmniFocus sync, or are you copying the file up there through some other method?

Also, can you copy a file with '=' and '+' in the file name directly to the WebDAV server (not through OmniFocus)?
What sort of server exactly do you have?

I am having exactly the same problem with my MacBook Air running the latest 'Sneak peak' version.
It happens on every sync with the 1.1 version on the iPhone and happens fairly frequently when the 1.0 version is on the iPhone.
I am using .Mac.

I have paid £12 for the iPhone version but this is putting me off paying £40 for the Mac version.

(This isn't meant to be a moan and I know sync is in Beta but there doesn't seem having an iPhone version unless it syncs)

I just got the same message and I didn't restore as the message suggested. I'm using .mac (MobileMe) to sync between the Sneaky Peek revision 103214 and iPhone 1.1 (?). I'm afraid and don't know what to do. It seems I've been frequently losing info during syncs in general.

Specifically, I manually synced my phone, then closed the application on the phone. (The desktop version was not running.) I opened the desktop version, and synced. I got the message about having to reopen the local database (can't remember the exact msg. but this seems to always cause problems) then downloaded and installed the update. I started changing info, and it then came up with this message.

I didn't notice the errors right away. I'm going to have to be much more diligent on looking for these errors to give better feedback. I have been very diligent, however, about only having one program (either the iPhone or the local version) running at once and manually syncing after and before switching.

This goes with my post above.

I chose to use the local copy, but then lost the task changes but not the new tasks I made on my iPhone. I had completed some items and changed the due dates on some items on my phone, and those were NOT reflected in the sync prior to the upgrade. But, like I said, the new projects and tasks I added did show up. I left that off the previous post because I didn't notice it until after the upgrade.

After I chose to use the local database from the prompt, I closed the application again, then opened it on my phone. I got the same message on my phone and chose to use the server copy. This then mirrored the state on the desktop.

Yeah so far I haven't been having any problems with MobileMe, but I don't want to pay for it so I'm hoping the WebDAV issues get ironed out.

Ok so I updated to the latest version tonight and it worked better. Now only one file fails to transfer to my WebDAV server. Here is the error message from the log on the server:

Those log files are from my apache webserver. If you run your own server you will have access to the error file and that's where those are from. =]

Cannot sync because database has reverted
 

I'm seeing the same problem everyone else is reporting here. I sent an e-mail to support a couple of days ago, but haven't heard back. I bought the iPhone app the day of release and that was my first exposure to Omni. It lead me to consider the desktop version, but at $80, I just can't justify the money when the syncing appears to be so flawed. My trial license expires tomorrow, so if you guys at Omni want me to continue playing with your Alpha versions, please give me another trial license. I'm not going to spend any money until this is worked out.

Also, have you guys thought about hosting your own central server and doing this via syncml? It appears you guys are using a custom approach to syncing and it may be more trouble than it's worth. Hosting would be the web 2.0 saas way to go, and you guys could charge a subscription fee. It would be worth it if it worked.

nsxlane: We're resetting the demo period on OmniFocus in the next Sneaky Peek (should be out within a few hours, I think). We've fixed several issues in the last day or so, and we want people to be able to see the improvements before having to make their decision.

Ok so first of all WebDAV syncing from the desktop app works. I am able to sync (it's really fast now and sends less data, only a few hundred K instead of 4MB) and everything copies, no errors in my server log.

I am now testing the iphone app, it's downloading the database now, EDGE isn't as fast as the DS3 I have here at work!

Ok so I downloaded the database from my WebDAV server and that worked great. I made some changes and hit the sync button and it's been a few minutes so far and it's still sending data. It would be a good idea to only send the data that changes instead of the whole thing every time. Am I missing something?

Ok the sync from my iPhone finished and it worked! Desktop is updated!

Ok I spoke to soon. After one successful syncing I then ran in to an error where my desktop wanted me to take the server's changes which there weren't any as I was making changes on the desktop and not the iphone.

It kept asking me to reload my database and resync so I backed up (thankfully) and then resynced. It pulled an older version off of my server and I had to restore from backup.

I ended up having to remove everything off the WebDAV server and start the sync process over again.

I just reset the database on my iPhone so we'll see how that goes.

The iPhone was pulling the latest stuff from the Inbox, but it wasn't showing some updated Contexts.

I think the issue may have to do with having the iPhone trying to sync while I'm making changes on the Desktop.

I won't do that again.

Ok this is really strange. Here is what I did:

1) I turned off sync in the Desktop app.

2) I deleted the WebDAV files completely.

3) I deleted the database from the iPhone.

4) I turned back on sync and synced successfully to the WebDAV server from the Desktop app.

5) I sent my iphone an email with the settings, clicked on it and then it downloaded the data successfully.

The problem is that some of my contexts are not showing up.

Ok now after making a few changes to my Desktop copy it is prompting me to choose the Local vs. the Server copy on every sync.

Ok so it's still not working. I'm guessing that Omnifocus caches the zip files it uploads somewhere and that's why I keep getting missing items even after resetting my database on the iPhone and WebDAV server.

Here is my unsolicited advice:

Create a text file that stores the modification times and client names of all the files in the OmniFocus.ofocus folder. On both the phone and desktop client, only update / download items they don't match the local copies.

eecue: Is it possible that the contexts weren't showing up because you had some kind of filtering on?

Also, I really DO NOT recommend manually uploading and downloading the .zip files inside your OmniFocus.ofocus file.

Could you send us (or post) a list of the files inside OmniFocus.ofocus on your WebDAV server? That can help us figure out where things are going awry.

Dave, it's not completely clear - are you using 1.1 sneaky peek, build 77.7.0.10333 or later, released late Thursday night (PDT)? We fixed a syncing bug at that point (although the bug fix won't be available on the phone until 1.0.2 is released - sorry, no ETA yet).

If so, does OmniFocus log anything to the console (/Applications/Utilities/Console) when you try to sync? If so, those messages might be helpful in figuring out what the problem is.


As for your suggestion about the text file, we're already effectively doing that, although the details are rather more complex as that's insufficient information to let us do intelligent merging of changes, tracking of an arbitrary number of clients, removal of no-longer-needed transactions, etc. But if you look at the client files inside the .ofocus file on the WebDAV server, you'll see that it's a text XML file identifying the client and its last sync time and so forth, and we do use that information to avoid downloading more than we have to (though we may be able to improve that further in future versions). However, since we have made some changes to the way syncing works, and those changes aren't available on the iPhone yet, if you are syncing OmniFocus data on an iPhone/iPod touch, the .ofocus file on the WebDAV server will reflect a mixture of the new and old schemes. After 1.0.2 is released for the phone, that will all collapse to the new scheme.

Ok cool that makes sense about the syncing XML as well as the updated iPhone client. If you would like a beta tester of the iPhone software let me know, I have a Jailbroken iPhone so I should be able to install the latest version (1.0.2) if need be.

As far as filtering, there is nothing odd about the context that wasn't showing up. Are you sure there isn't some sort of cache that I could delete?

Either way stand by for an ls of my WebDAV folder and an export of my Console log.

FYI, with the "Ad Hoc" distribution method for iPhone applications, there's no need for a Jailbroken iPhone to be a beta tester. However, since that method is limited to only 100 devices, I STRONGLY suspect that Omni will never be able to (publicly) use it, given that this number is only 1% (or less, I suspect) of the people who would WANT to have access to another tasty flavor of "Sneaky Peek" (such as, well, ME!)

I thought it would be worth a mention that I turned on MobileMe sync and it's been working so far.

This is not a solution, but a temporary fix as I won't be buying a MobileMe subscription.

I don't have an answer for you; hopefully someone who knows better will be able to pitch in. Meanwhile, if you haven't already done so, please make sure to report your problems to our support staff (ideally by using the "Send Feedback" item in the Help menu) so that the issue will get officially tracked and responded to.

We've gotten pretty slammed with email since the App Store went live, so the support team is really busy right now and we're not getting through the email as fast as we normally do (our goal is a much shorter wait for a reply), but we are working our way through it, and that way the issues do get tracked and reports get correlated with others having the same issues, which isn't feasible in the forum setting.
