HuffingtonPost images are not loading

The Huffington Post site has started playing an image game that is confusing OmniWeb 5.7 (but not Safari 3.1.1 or Firefox 2.0.0.14) -- many of the article thumbnails are blank. This started happening sometime today.

<img class="unloaded-image" longdesc="http://images.huffingtonpost.com/gen/22022/thumbs/r-PENTAGONHEADS-large.jpg" width="600" height="275" src="/images/trans.gif">

Note that the "src" image is a transparent GIF, while the actual image URL is specified with an unusual "longdesc" attribute. Hmmm. I wonder how this works.

When OmniWeb spoofs as Safari 3.0.4, the images appear. Hmmm, again.

Still failing in 5.8 SP1

I just upgraded from 5.7 to 5.8 SP1 (101362).

When I noticed The Huffington Post thumbnails were not being display, I checked spoofing and found it set to a Firefox for Mac release (don't recall which one).

I set identification back to vanilla OmniWeb, hoping that would work. Nope.

Changing identification to Safari 3.1.1 restores the thumbnails.

This problem most likely resides the (not too smart) browser detection code on the HuffPo site.

Yeah, it looks like it's the browser sniffing causing problems here. Not sure if there is anything we can really do here aside from change our user agent string or special case the string for HuffingtonPost.

We have a few ideas floating around for improving compatibility with these sites but it's something that probably wont make it in for 5.8

Scrolling causes thumbnails to appear.

Since my earlier post, I've noticed a related problem with missing thumbnails, even when spoofing as Safari.

Occasionally, the article thumbnails (not the main image at the top) are missing when the page first appears. As soon as I begin scrolling down, the missing thumbnails pop into view.

The HuffPo site designers should lose style points for being unnecessarily clever.

Temporary WebKit incompatibility - back to Safari spoofing

Most HuffPo article thumbnails disappeared sometime in the last 24 hours. I don't know whether this is due to a site change or the latest release of OmniWeb 5.8 SP1 (now at 103456).

On this round, Safari 3.1.2 is also not showing thumbnail images.

Since OmniWeb 5.7 and Firefox 2.0.0.16 work fine, I suspect a WebKit-HuffPo incompatibility.

Spoofing as Firefox doesn't help.

UPDATE:

David M. responded to my formal report, indicating Safari 3.1.2 and Safari spoofing worked for him. And it's working for me now, too. Since I tested carefully and double-checked earlier today, it appears the HuffPo developers fixed something in the interim.

The Omni Group won this round with speedy tech support. (It's clear HuffPo's browser detection is still incomplete - a perfect test case for OmniWeb's excellent site-specific spoofing.)
