Repeated requests for login info when syncing [Apparent bug in 10.8, not OF; use workaround on pg.2]

Hi guys,
I recently bought your apps and I think that they're really great. Unfortunately I encountered an error while trying to sync mac and iPad versions ( iOS 5 beta version ). Every sync option I choose, it keeps asking for username and password ( both MobileMe, Bonjour and WebDAV ). I guess the problem is with the new alert View APIs for text fields. I know you guys don't support the beta version and you don't want to talk about ( I don't want either ) but is there any known workaround? Do you plan to release any fix for this problem or do I wait for the final version?

Lizard 2011-07-11 04:15 PM

sirjohn, would you mind emailing omnifocus-ipad@omnigroup.com with a little more detail?

shamil 2011-08-01 09:58 PM

I have a feeling that this is related to iOS 5, through its newer connection mechanism that keeps tripping something.

Agnostus 2011-08-15 11:59 PM

Hi,

I have mentioned problem on my Mac with OmniSync. The iOS version syncs without complaints, but OF for Mac does not accept my login. Well, does not accept actually is wrong, because it does not complain. Just a second after I enter my credentials and the login window disappears, it pops up again. Doesn't remember my credentials either.

Sorry for the trouble here, Martin! This often means that more than one user name or password for the account you're syncing with has been saved to the Keychain on your Mac. In cases like you describe, OmniFocus is grabbing one of the incorrect copies, causing the server to kick the password back at us.

If you use the "Keychain Access" application in your Utilities folder to examine the contents of your keychain, you may be able to find any duplicate or incorrect entries. After removing them, restart OmniFocus and try to sync. If that doesn't resolve the problem, email the support ninjas and we'll be happy to investigate this with you. Hope this helps!

OmniFocus keeps asking for Username & Password

Hi,

Omnifocus works fine, but the synch server (Omnifocus) keeps asking for username and password every 5 minutes or so. Very annoying.

"The server "Omni Sync" requires authentication."

Name:
Password:
Remember in Keychain

I have also checked the keychain, but there is no entry whatsoever that starts with "omni".

Any ideas how to solve that?

First: the hostname for the Omni Sync Server actually starts with "sync", not "omni". It will look something like this in Keychain Access:

Second: there's a quirk (some might even call it a bug) in OmniFocus' handling of sync credentials such that if you enter the username portion incorrectly the very first time, you get a keychain entry with the incorrect username, and it is never remedied, even when you subsequently enter correct information. The fix is to delete the offending keychain entry and enter the correct details next time. Note that the Omni Sync Server has a username which is different than the email address you supplied at signup; it is easy to imagine that one encountering the process for the first time might mistakenly put in the email address used for signing up instead of the username.

Many thanx for your post. The problem is that I can't find anything at all in my keychain. (That might be the problem?) Is there a way to add this to the keychain?

I am an ok Mac user, but not a hacker as such.

Johan

You can't find anything relating to OmniFocus in your keychain, or you can't find anything at all? Normally I would suggest contacting Omni support by phone, but it sounds like they are offline until 10 AM Tuesday morning in Seattle, which is a long time to wait! If you enter the credentials correctly by hand, does it sync successfully until you quit the program? If so, I would suggest just leaving it running.

I can't find anything called omni, omnigroup, omnifocus in my keychain. I tried to insert that my self, but it didn't work.

Lizard 2012-01-11 02:32 PM

TheFox: Are you still stuck? Email or call our Ninjas so one of them can work this out with you. (We would really like to figure out why this happens sometimes, so we can fix it in the app and have it never happen to anyone again.)

MetadataMaven 2012-08-01 06:38 AM

Tried all the suggestions, still stuck

I'm a new OmniFocus user, though I've used other Omni products for some time. I also bought the iPad version, though haven't used it yet (and am not motivated to do that until I figure out why I get asked for credentials every time I change something.

I do have a few things in my keychain, but nothing omni-related.

Brian 2012-08-02 03:55 PM

Welcome to the forums, MM, and sorry for the trouble! There are few different things that could be going on here. However, barring unusual circumstances, you shouldn't be asked for credentials unless you have sync enabled. Since you're not using the iPad app yet, you can probably just turn sync off for the time being if that's what's causing this.

If that doesn't resolve the issue, it's probably going to be easiest to sort out if you send some screenshots of your Sync preferences in the Mac app to our support ninjas or give them a call at 800.315.6664 so they can help you over the phone.

Having Same Problem

I am long time user of OF Mac and since switching to Mountain Lion, I am being asked repeatedly to enter my OmniSyc credentials which has never happened before. Deleting the Keychain entry and recreating fixes the issue for one or two times but then it returns.

This is quite maddening...what can we do?

Lizard 2012-08-09 05:11 PM

sgmiller: I think I saw your ticket in our queue today, so perhaps a Support Ninja has already helped you get things sorted out. Some people report that rebooting their computer (and then re-entering it once after that) clears up the issue.
I feel impertinent for asking, but are you checking the box to have the login details remembered?

We find it rather maddening too, having so many of our customers annoyed at each major OS update and not being able to figure out why this is happening or how we can prevent it.

Repeated requests for login info when syncing [Possible 10.8 issues - researching.]

I feel like 5 years back, when it comes to syncing:

- Omnisync keeps asking me for my password every second sync or so

- WebDAV on Lion Server sync with Mac and iPad perfectly, iPhone keeps popping up an error message.

So, basically, since the demise of Mobile Me there is no working sync solution for me.

Anyone having this problems and solved them?

Thanks

Wolfgang

Also having OmniSync issues

Since I upgraded to Mountain Lion, every time I open OmniFocus on the Mac it asks me for username and password. Even after I enter them it continues to pop up. The only way I've found to get around this issue is to quit and restart OmniFocus. Wondering if a fix is in the works?

Brian 2012-08-17 03:04 PM

Sorry for the trouble this is causing! Drew, we've gotten reports of a number of keychain-related issues from folks who've installed 10.8. Wok4, you don't mention which OS you have installed; if it's not Mountain Lion, let us know and we can investigate this with you.

Some customers seeing this have reported that using Keychain Access to remove the entry for sync.omnigroup.com is sufficient to get things back up and running normally, at least temporarily. (We've seen reports of similar keychain-related issues in other apps on Mountain Lion, so our current working theory is that this is something Apple's going to need to address.)

Another issue we've had reported on 10.8 is OmniFocus asking for your login information when the app launches in response to the clipping shortcut. (This doesn't appear to happen if OmniFocus is already running when you clip something.)

We're looking into this one, but for the time being, we'd suggest making OmniFocus one of your Login Items (via the "Users & Groups" pane of System Preferences), then hiding (rather than quitting) the app when you're not using it. That should reduce the number of times that panel appears.

If neither of those sound like what you're seeing, email our support ninjas and we'll be happy to look into this with you. Sorry again for the trouble!

Brian 2012-08-17 03:06 PM

Wok4: if you haven't already, use the link in my previous post to contact our support ninjas for help with the iPhone problem - it'll be helpful if you include the text of the error message you're getting. Thanks!

Second, every time I sync it asks me for my password to Omni. "The server OmniSync requires authentication." Despite entering the correct username and password (allowing sync to go ahead appropriately), and checking the 'Remember in Keychain' box, it always asks me to enter it again.

I continue to have this same problem, despite installing the latest version of Omnifocus, dumping my cache, rebuilding my database, etc. Has anyone found a fix yet?

I too am being asked repeatedly for my username and password after upgrading to Mountain Lion. This, along with the broken mail rule under Mountain Lion has made OmniFocus a real mess. I'm disappointed that these issues were not addressed by OmniGroup in the months in which developers could access and test against Mountain Lion.

You're making a big assumption here, which is that the problem manifested itself during their testing prior to ML's release. You're also assuming that ML has been a stationary target, but it hasn't. For a concrete example that has caused some OmniFocus crashes, see Ken's post here. No amount of testing against code that is different from what Apple finally releases is going to ensure trouble-free operation!

Contact the support ninjas directly, and they'll help you track down the problem. Email omnifocus@omnigroup.com, or call 800-315-6664 or +1-206-523-4152 between 10 and 5, Seattle time.

Same issue

I have the exact same issue:

Running OF 1.10.3 on OSX 10.8.2 on a latest gen MacBook Air.

This is the first time I have tried to use OF since upgrading to 10.8.2 from 10.8.1. I get the same issue, dialog box for the Sync server keeps popping up. Used the same credentials to log into the website, no problems there.

How do I fix this?

Brian 2012-09-24 03:44 PM

Sorry for the confusion! This appears to be a bug in 10.8 which Apple will need to address in a system update. More information, including a workaround is available in this post.
