Omnifocus Themes

Hi,
I discovered this morning the ability to load/save themes for OmniFocus ('Style' pane of the Preferences). I don't know since when this has been available, but whatever, the thing is great. I'm with no doubt part of those people claiming that Omnifocus is brilliant but could do some effort on UI.
No doubt that theming is a first step to a better UI design (although theming in essence doesn't effect design).

Along with the above considerations, I have a question regarding themes:

Does a repository for themes exist at the OmniGroup, or somewhere else over the net? I'd love to see what omni did, and compare it to user-defined themes.
Even better : are some themes already available in the app's bundle?

xmas 2008-08-11 12:31 PM

There are still some theme issues we're sorting out.

But I know that I and some others at Omni have been playing around with the typography, and I think we even changed some of the defaults pretty recently.

At this time we don't plan to include any themes in the bundle. We'd much rather make sure that the defaults work well for the majority of folks.

a11en 2008-09-05 02:56 PM

This theme idea may solve the 3x5 card printing and data-density problem that has compeletly frustrated me with Omnifocus. It would be nice to save the column spacing as well so that we can pack more in during printing.

Now, as long as perspectives can switch themes, I think we're onto a printing solution to 3x5 cards... it would also be nice to group printing out by project only or by context only... i.e., one 3x5 card per project, or one 3x5 card per context (of course these may need to spill onto other cards as well, but should make a "new page" break at the end of their record.)

I have some playing to do to figure this out I guess...

Here's a little typography-based (rather than indentation-based) theme I'm working on for my own use. Please let me know what you think of it.

Wow, trying to load that theme totally sent OF into the weeds! CPU meter is still pinned several minutes later... I'll send in a trace. Oh, and then pressing Reset got the same result, followed by a crash. There might still be some room for optimization here :)

I always have omnifocus open on the laptop while I'm working on the external display and I don't like having a white bright screen on the side so I just made a darker template.

I thought this thread deserved a bump - it seems like the theming issues have been mostly fleshed out. Do people have any themes out there that they love - or is anyone building a repository (as the OP asked about)?

I'm still trying to put one together that makes sense - but I'd love to see what some of the more creatively-inclined OFers have come up with.

LawDaddy 2008-11-09 01:46 PM

I was just going through some of the threads and looking to freshen up my themes and came across some good ones! This thread deserves a double-bump!

I, too, work late at night and don't like the bright default display. I like the dark theme posted above, but does anyone know if we will be able to change the colors of the check boxes? They (along with other navigation items) can get lost on dark backgrounds... Perhaps just making any navigation elements on the same item line inherit the corresponding text's color???

I love this theme but some of the box are showing weird.

my Inbox is coming up as such:

minimal style theme

Hi,

just noticed this thread after my post

So I guess this is the right place to put this:

the default style of Omnifocus was a little to heavy for me so I created this minimal version. You can download it from here.
(The Possibilities to change the style in Omnifocus is limited so this theme is just a little step in a simpler direction)

Changes made:
⁍ Lineheight and child intend reduced (the theme data format is actual kind of xml file where you can adjust some details better than in omnifocus)
⁍ Type has less contrast
⁍ Smaller Fontsize
⁍ No next action or single action highlighting
⁍ and some other minor changes.

Install Instructions:
Exctract the zip file and douple Click it's content("Omnifocus_minimal...ofocus-theme"). Omnifocus will ask you if you want to use this theme. Click replace. (You can go back to the default theme anytime).

Sort of like a yellow legal pad .. [Schlaefer's theme ]

made an update of the theme because the type in the quick entry window was accidently very bright.

themes and printing

Is there a way to apply a theme but not have it used when printing? I like some of these themes being posted, but when trying to print on a black and white laser printer, it does not look very good. Even when checking off "black and white printing" the backgrounds still come out in various shades of gray (as well as the type, depending on what kind of action it is).

Thanks for any help/advice.

Eric

whpalmer4 2009-03-13 09:30 AM

You can switch between two themes fairly easily by putting aliases to the theme files in your dock, on your desktop, etc. Double-click on the printing theme, whip off the print job, double-click on the screen them... It would be nice if OmniFocus could be a bit smarter about not reminding you to save the settings if they are unchanged from when loaded, although perhaps it would be effort just as well spent allowing one to specify a different theme for printing purposes in your case...

Get rid of the red, get rid of the anxiety

2 Attachment(s)
I'm glad to find this theme thread; it's good to see how others are styling OF... Hope to see more. I'm not a UI designer, and would like to see what some pros might do.

One of the things i messed with is the idea of a RED overdue task. It totally made me anxious and dogmatic about my workflow. So instead I went for the theme here. It's completely changed my "feeling" about looking at my tasks.

Bright highlight for tasks overdue feels less like i've made horrible errors with my time. Lighter highlighting for tasks due soon. and no highlighting for tasks available, but not urgent or required. This is how I roll in OF.

Like i said, not a UI designer and would definitely love to see what more people are using. And would really be interested in seeing how I can make this look better.

lolajl 2009-05-26 01:17 AM

Is there a theme switcher in the Prefs section? It would make sense to have a Prefs tab where you are presented with a list of themes, in addition to default, and a button for "Reset" for when you wan to go back to OF's default theme.

chasereeves 2009-05-26 07:19 AM

In preferences, you can go to "Style" and bottom left is a little gear that comes up with a menu to load and save new themes. You can also copy and paste styles from this menu.

Brian 2009-05-27 01:24 PM
How did you make this transparent?
It's a feature of the Mac OS X color picker panel - any color can be made more or less opaque. At the bottom of the panel, there's an "Opacity" slider. 0% opacity is transparent.

Yes, it is. Right click and Saved Link File As... if in Safari. If you add ".ofocus-theme" as the extension, you can double-click the file to load it. Don't forget to save your old settings as a theme first if you might want to go back to them.

I really like the dark theme in post 26 - but icant open it.

whpalmer4 2009-08-28 09:38 AM

After you unzip the file, rename it to have .ofocus-theme as the extension. At that point you should be able to double-click it and have it load. Alternatively, go to the Style preferences in OF, click the little gear at the bottom left, and choose Load Theme, then select the file (it won't matter if you've renamed it with this approach).

Hi,
I'm new to the forum, but I've been reading its posts for a long time. As this forum has been very helpful for me, I think it's time to give something back. So, attached you find the theme I'm using now (OF 1.7.1), and a couple of screenshots that illustrate a few more tweaks I've made by replacing some icons inside Omnifocus.app with icons “borrowed” from… ehm… The Hit List and Things (such icons are not attached).

My perspective window is always open to the left of the screen. For those who are curious about my toolbar, from left to right you find: inbox, project/context mode, focus, inspector, due items, important (aka flagged) items, clean up, (weekly) review, mark reviewed, the “Project Folder” and “Project Notes” applescripts that I've found in this forum, the search field, the view bar button, and OF's “split/merge window” applescripts (with custom icons downloaded from http://iconfactory.com/freeware/).

pgsimas 2009-08-31 02:48 PM

How did you get the icons in place on your OF theme?

druido 2009-08-31 10:54 PM

The icons are found in the Resources folder of the package contents of the respective applications. For OF:

1) close OF;
2) find OF's application icon in the Finder and right-click on it;
3) choose "Show Package Contents".

Some icon files are in Contents/Frameworks/OmniFocusInterface.framework/Resources/ (Context.pdf, Folder.pdf, Project.pdf, …), others are in Contents/Resources/ (e.g., Projects.pdf, etc…). Just replace those files (backup OF first).

The icons I have used are mostly from THL, apart from the Library icon, which is from Things. In those applications, they are stored as png images: I have copied them, converted them into pdf with Preview, renamed them appropriately and put them inside OF's package content.

I did these changes because, for me, the small project and context icons look too similar. Now I can visually distinguish between them much better.
The drawback is that, when you update OF, these changes may get lost.

pgsimas 2009-09-01 12:13 PM

pretty amazing. Thanks for the tip!

No, what you see is what you get in Quick Entry. I'd like an option to change this also, as I'd rather see a HUD-style theme for Quick Entry.

That's a great site, thanks for putting those up!

Like others who have posted here, I have omnifocus (and omnioutliner!) open on my laptop literally all the time while I'm working on my big screen. It's an awesome arrangement-- but the bright glaring background becomes annoying.

As such, I have been trying to come up with a good "inversed" theme-- light text on a black background-- since I find this much easier to look at. Luckily this is easy to do in XCode and Terminal (see attached screenshots) but is not really possible in omnifocus (or omnioutliner) because the little fold-up triangles and checkboxes don't change colors with the text-- they are always black, no matter what. For my needs, this is really the only thing wrong with these applications.

I filed a feature request for this recently (and one for omnioutliner several years ago!) but apparently it hasn't come up as a high priority yet... Is anyone else here longing for this feature? I noticed on www.ofthemes.com that the first theme "transparent" is sort of inversed, but would clearly benefit if the checkboxes and triangle colors would match the text colors.
Months ago I started a sinatra app to collect OF themes with comments and screenshots. Never made it public because I didn't finished it but I fixed some errors this morning and it seems to be working:

http://ofthemes.com

If someone wants to add or delete a theme please mail it to me at deadsunrise@deadsunrise.net (the upload function is not working yet)
Thanks for this, Deadsunrise. If I can improve on anything there, I'll submit it for others.
I just finished these two themes, one standard and one minimal.
I hope you enjoy them, the borders around the actions were extremely difficult to style properly.
I really like these themes-thanks for posting them! I've wanted to have my borders look like this for a long, long time. I do want to let you know that some of the colors assigned in the themes I downloaded do not match the pictures posted here. As one example, the due soon color I have is blue instead of orange. Nothing I can't adjust myself, but I thought I would mention it just the same.

I'm curious how you hide the folders in the Main Outline? If I have the same sample project under the folder 'Web', I see the following in the outline.

Thanks again for posting-nice work!

In the view bar, set the grouping to Ungrouped.

Thanks Curt-I appreciate the info.

I have an additional question for @NightLion or anyone else that may know the answer. The two themes posted also change the look of the Quick Entry window and I have never before noticed a theme that does that. Is this by accident or design, and if it is by design, how does one customize the theme to change the style of the QE window?

Separators?

Along somewhat different lines, I wonder if it's possible to have horizontal separators between tasks of the same order according to the 'sort' criterion.

For example, in context view (grouped by context, sorted by project):

——————————————————————
CONTEXT 1
Task 1 Project 1
Task 2 Project 1
——————————— <–- Separator!
Task 3 Project 2
——————————— <— Separator!
Task 4 Project 3
Task 5 Project 3
——————————————————————
CONTEXT 2
Task 1 Project 1
——————————— <–- Separator!
Task 2 Project 2
Task 3 Project 2
Task 4 Project 2
——————————— <— Separator!
Task 5 Project 3
——————————————————————

Update to Divergence Theme

I've gotten a lot of good feedback from people on the Divergence Theme that I posted quite a while ago up higher in this thread. I've made a lot of updates based on that feedback:

Thanks for the continued feedback.

I absolutely adore this theme!
Easy on the eyes, just enough colour variation to separate what needs to be.

Thanks for this one Schlaefer!

A plain draft theme which works well for me, though probably not glamorous enough for many :-)

Theme file attached, but the redundant lines encircling projects still have to be removed manually by unchecking "rounded" in the Preferences style dialog. (A bug, it seems, in the reading of theme files).

The visually noisy filter bar has been muted with this script, using a setting of:
property alphaLabels : 0.0
As for the toolbar, I tend to switch it off, and prefer to assign keystrokes with Keyboard Maestro.

I just had to say THANK YOU.

I recently came back to OmniFocus and I was struggling with it. I didn't realize how much the garish colors, weird spacing and font was throwing me off until I tried your theme.

I tweaked your project headings ever so slightly, but essentially kept the rest as-is and OmniFocus is a whole new experience for me. So much easier to focus on the task at hand, literally.

Great job, and thanks again.

hello,

a little bit about my OmniFocus theme is available on my weblog:

KVET.CH

i use color to indicate "severity" or availability of tasks, it makes the things that are "past-due" stand out and shame me.

by all means reuse, remix, just don't call it emoryfocus :)

NightLion Theme 4 - Cleaner, Slimmer, and Styled for Lion

This is by far the most clean and slimmed down theme I've designed for Omnifocus. I styled it to match the colors and themes found in the new OSX Lion interface. I think it's a great fit. I hope you enjoy it.

This is a great one! I just tweaked your theme by changing the backgrounds of my Overdue and Due Soon tasks. I also took some inspiration from the Asian Efficiency theme.

I set Overdue tasks to a bold, red typeface with a bright yellow background. This is the warning sign that I have overdue items.

Due Soon tasks are set to a bold, orange typeface with a light yellow background. Orange is my color for warning!

This helps the Due Soon and Overdue tasks stick out a lot more.

Tasks that are unavailable (not yet started, blocked by a prior action) are grayed out. It helps visually block out tasks that I am unable to do today.

Tasks that are available but not urgent (not due or flagged) have a green bold font with white background. The color green reminds me of a "Go" stoplight and tells me that I can do this item now.

I think it might be a bit too colourful for many folks but I tend to look at things through colors. Changing font sizes didn't really do it for me because it was just too subtle for me.

Thanks to Asian Efficiency and NightLion for the inspiration!

Thanks for the great themes!

wilsonng 2012-09-18 03:39 AM

I was getting bothered by my bright colors in my first attempt at modifying my theme that was influenced the Asian Efficiency OmniFocus theme and the NightLion OmniFocus theme.

I've toned my colors so that it's not as bright as loud.

I still use Red for overdue, Orange for Due Soon, Grey for unavailable/blocked actions, and Green for Available actions.

Just returning back to the community and hope that others can take ideas and create their own OmniFocus theme.

Late in the day – perhaps OmniFocus 1 is now moving towards its final year – I find that I am now less distracted by the kind of background used by FoldingText, ByWord etc.,
in the region of {242, 242, 242} {248, 248, 248}
than by the (calm but slightly more soporific ?) shades of parchment on which I used to write my notes.

Hello,

I created my own Theme simply by changing font and background colors in Preferences->Style, but I have a problem.

I do not know what changed, I tried to fix it but I don't know what caused the change?

This occurs only when any task is OVERDUE:

In OmniFocus on the right of the Project/Single-Action List (which contains overdue task)

On the applications bar on Mac (Mountain Lion)

That should be red. When the item is SOON the orange color is like it should be.

Thanks

BrainInside 2012-10-29 09:09 AM

I guess this is a bug after the new update, because when I reset the styles (theme) it shows the same.

I have another question.
Below there is a theme I created. But, the links are totally not visible with this blue color. Is there any way to change it? How?

The theme is the Adobe-style kind'a. I like the dark colors. It doesn't make my eyes so tired like bright background.
