Unable to Synchronize database with server [Resolved]

I pressed sync but a warning window popped up saying that the "local:_____omniFocus.ofocus," is signed by an untrusted root server.

What does this mean?

whpalmer4 2010-09-05 10:08 AM

It's apparently a bug that you are getting that warning, judging from Ken's post in this thread: http://forums.omnigroup.com/showthread.php?t=14823

I don't know if this was never fixed, or if it was fixed and broke again, but you should use Contact Omni (under the gear menu) to send in a report that you are seeing this behavior. You can read the Omni support ninja's recommendations for what to do in that same thread, then if something bad happens, you're following their advice, not mine :)

iPhone continuous search for my Mac

I have the mac, iPhone, and iPad versions. However, syncing is a pain!!!

First I tried with iPad, no luck!

Now, I'm trying with iPhone and no luck.

I have a wifi network and Mobile Me.

Can someone provide basic instructions on how to sync?

OmniFocus doesn't sync one device to another, but rather multiple devices to a server. That server can be the Omni Sync Service (read all about it here: http://forums.omnigroup.com/showthread.php?t=15967) or Apple's MobileMe, or a Mac running OmniFocus, or some other properly functioning WebDAV server to which you have sufficient access. The Omni server and MobileMe are probably the easiest options for most people, although the Apple one costs money after your free trial is up.

You can read about the Omni Sync Service in the thread about it here: http://forums.omnigroup.com/showthread.php?t=15967

The service itself can be found at http://sync.omnigroup.com though if you don't already have an account, you might not get one until Tuesday or so, considering it is a holiday weekend in the US.

That's the thing, I have MobileME. All I ask is for a simple instruction on how to sync all my devices.

How did you configure your iPad to do the syncing? That's not the usual URL used, which is:

Why not relax and I'll help you get it configured? The three apps sync quite well if you configure them correctly.

Yes, put I also have data on the ipad that I want synced. But yes, you're right.

whpalmer4 2010-09-05 06:04 PM

Have you ever had syncing working, or did you just start entering tasks on each device hoping to sync them together?

whpalmer4 2010-09-05 06:08 PM

You can get the details on how many actions and projects are on the iPhone and iPad by going to their respective settings pages and reporting the statistics there. There isn't a built-in report in the Mac application, but from your answer on the other thread, I'm assuming that it has the largest number of items.

whpalmer4 2010-09-05 06:29 PM

Here's how I recommend you proceed:

On the Mac, go to System Preferences, MobileMe. Find out what your member name is. Also verify that under the iDisk tab, iDisk Sync is off. If you use this feature, it can be turned on later, once we've gotten the devices all synced together (a different URL is needed in that case).

Now launch OmniFocus on the Mac, go to the Preferences, and select the Sync panel. Click the Reset button at the bottom left. Next, click on the MobileMe tab for sync method. This should get you the proper URL. Verify that your MobileMe member name appears in there. Click Sync Now. It should successfully sync your database to MobileMe. If you get a window offering to replace your database and start syncing, press Cancel. That will happen if there is an existing database present, and in that case you would want to use the File->Replace Server Database... command in OmniFocus to tell it that the copy on your Mac is the most up to date version and should replace the one on MobileMe.

Do this and report back.

Ok, I'm on the above step and I have verified that my user name is included but after the /documents/ part it doesn't say anything else. Earlier you mentioned that it should also say OmniFocus.ofocus. <---that is not mentioned.

Update:

When I click on Sync now, it reads that the sync failed.

Note: My wifi works so it cannot be a network issue.

Yeah, I was giving the full pathname, but what you enter is the pathname for the directory that contains the OmniFocus.ofocus file (which as it turns out is actually a directory masquerading as a file).

/Documents is not the same as /documents, by the way please be careful to report details exactly as they are presented to you, because what seems like an inconsequential matter often isn't.

Okay, in the Sync preferences, if you click on the little i in a black circle at the end of the line where it reports that the sync failed, it should report the reason why it failed. What does it say?

Ok, i figured out what the issue was. In System Preference> security>Firewall> advance> somehow OmniFocus was denied connections. I got it to accept connections and I got OF on mac to sync with MobileMe. Then I shared settings with iPhone and got the iphone to sync.

However, my iPad is not syncing. My Mac shows up but it shows up as if my internet is offline.

whpalmer4 2010-09-05 08:44 PM

Great! I was just about to ask you about your firewall settings, but was trying to make it fail similarly first.

Use the Email Settings button on the OmniFocus (Mac) sync preferences page, then read the email on the iPad and tap the enclosed link. Wouldn't surprise me if the firewall is somehow interfering with the discovery mechanism.

Yes, that is correct open the email on the iPad and tap the enclosed link, which will launch OmniFocus and configure it. You'll still have to enter your MobileMe username and password when it tries to sync for the first time.

Mac to iPhone syncs strangly but iPhone to Mac does not sync at all

Ok, I finally got Mac to sync with my iphone but strangely it is only a partial sync. Note, there was no data on my iPhone's OF. When I synced Mac's OF with the iPhone, it synced all that was on my Mac's OF but when I go back to the Mac's OF, I cannot find all the data. In other words, some of the projects that were synced on iPhone from Mac are no longer found on the Mac. Strange!

This is frustrating. I purchased the iPad and iPhone version because I thought they would sync like iCal sync all the devices, with ease. All I want is seamless syncing, why did I read in the reviews that the syncing was perfect?

Yes, you're trying to sync two different databases that didn't start from the same point. OmniFocus has detected the lack of common ancestry and wants to know which one you want to keep. Don't worry, you don't have to lose any data, and you shouldn't have this problem in the future it stems from making independent changes on your devices before setting up syncing. However, I'm going to have you talk to the Omni support folks to walk you through the process, because it is a bit tedious to explain and they've probably got a canned description of the procedure. Give them a call tomorrow at 800-315-OMNI (US) or +1-206-523-4152 (Int'l) and they'll walk you through it.

Aw, what the heck, here's one way you can do it:

Cable up your iPad to your Mac. Launch iTunes, select the iPad in the source list (left column), click on the Apps tab on the right panel, scroll down to the bottom and select OmniFocus in the Apps section of File Sharing. Now in the Documents area that appears to the right, select OmniFocus.ofocus and click Save To... where you will save the database file to your desktop. Launch OmniFocus on the Mac, then double-click the OmniFocus.ofocus file you saved to your desktop, which will bring up your iPad's database in a separate OmniFocus window. Drag and drop any actions/projects that you created on the iPad into your main OmniFocus window. When you are done, click the sync button on your Mac, and wait for the sync to complete. After it does, launch OmniFocus on the iPad (no longer needs to be cabled to the Mac) and have it do a sync. When you are asked which database to keep, keep the sync database, into which you have just merged your iPad actions and projects. When the sync is complete, have a look at the data on the iPad and make sure everything looks correct. Now sync the iPhone and make sure it has everything.

whpalmer4 2010-09-06 09:29 PM

I'm sorry, no offense intended, but if you're asking me that question after reading my description of the process, I think the safest course of action is for you to cancel the sync on the iPad for now, and call Omni in the morning. They'll hold your hand and guide you through the process.

Good news is that if you're getting that message, it means everything is set for successful syncing once the two are reconciled. The reason it seems such a bumpy start is that you've done the equivalent of buying a new computer, installing a bunch of software on it, creating a directory full of files, and only now wanting to try out the Migration Assistant instead of waiting for it to do its work prior to playing with the new toy.
