Copy as PDF and use linkback

You could try this:

create the objects to be cropped in another canvas.

Select all, then go to Edit > Copy as... in the menu and select PDF

Paste the PDF into your original canvas....

Very simple applescript

Takes the (text) contents of the clipboard and puts each paragraph in its own box:

on run
set theText to get the clipboard
try
set theTextItems to every paragraph of theText
on error...
