Interesting ideas, but I'm not convinced they're better than the current implementation for my workflow (or even that the current behavior is a "hack").
Just wanted to point out that not everyone dislikes these 1.8 changes. I'm not even sure there's a significant number of people having a problem with it. That doesn't mean the issue still can't be addressed in some way, of course. :-)
