I can confirm that this bug happens on my Mac as well, not just your MBP. We don't know the cause at the moment but our team will look into this, rest assured.
As for the date time editor, we've thought about writing our own UI. With Leopard, we'll have some new technologies that will make that easier, so we may be able to do it then.
