I don't know of a way to get badge counts on the home screen.

The only thing I can do is to go to Forecast and see the number of deferred items for today. To show deferred tasks (tasks with start dates), you'll need to scroll your screen downward a little to show the menu bar that says:

( ) Sync (o) View O\ Search

Click on the View button and check on "Deferred Items"

I usually love my iPod touch on the Forecast perspective and stay there.
