There should be a 'last synced time' in the iPhone version of OmniFocus, as sometimes the Internet/3G connection is quite finicky and your data doesn't sync through.
Similar situation with background app updating – it's quite comforting that the feature exists, but I have no idea as to how recent or up-to-date the data actually is, so I'm quite reluctant to rely on it and instead just manually sync every single time.
