I think ken plans to respond on this thread - he's way more qualified than I am to provide details. [Edit: he beat me to the thread, actually. Darnit!]

General statements from my conversation with him: originally, we planned to store everything in one database, so no archive would be necessary. After launch, once customers had had a few months to accumulate some data, we began to realize that might work out as well as well as we hoped on a device with a fraction of the processor speed and memory of a desktop Mac. The archive was added at that point.

We had a ton of stuff to learn in the six months between the iPhone SDK being released and the launch of the App Store. This would be an example of one of those things. :-)

In any case; we'd definitely like to make the changes folks are discussing here. Stay tuned, and email the support ninjas to vote for them.
