Could your G4 have a stale MobileMe password stored away somewhere in its keychain? Some versions of Mac OS X have a bug where get confused when they find an out-of-date keychain entry, and rather than returning control to the application (so it can prompt for the correct password) they just try again with the wrong password from the keychain.
