Zack,
1) Open the Utility Drawer and type into the search box at the top for 'SpotLight' style searching. Be sure to select the top level Section if you want to search they entire document.
2) Your backup software should backup the version of the file that has been saved to the HD. It will not backup the unsaved changes in the open document.
