I guess I can almost see it if one would hold it in both hands like a steering wheel then the right thumb / right orientation makes some sense but I'm usually using my right hand for other things as well (mousing, typing, jotting down notes, phone calls, etc.).

Interesting. For exception of reading books using iBooks, I'm in my landscape mode 100% of the time to take advantage of the bigger screen real estate (sideways).
