Automatic styles are, in fact, constantly evolving styles that ensure there is no consistency in your document.

The little style boxes that appear when you invoke styles mode don't mean anything and do not indicate anything. The confusion is created because the application of a document style to a particular row level is mixed together with a specific instance or variance from that style. This makes it confusing, and you can never figure out where you are applying a style... I think this is true for many of the people on this thread, but styles get in the way of finishing the document and so most of us don't use them until the very end, because it just creates headaches otherwise.

I have attached an image of a bug and what is wrong with "automatic" styles.
