Does anyone know specifically what the criteria is for an Available item? I can not exactly figure it out. I thought it was items that had a start date or were do.

BTW, how do you handle only seeing what is available a.k.a. only what you need to and hiding the rest? I in the past have used flagging and or start dates. However, using flags often requires scrubbing the list often and some things that you need to come to your attention stay hidden because they became available between review periods.

However, each of these require after a while some effort in maintaining an accurate list, and still things seem to slip through the cracks. Such as having an item due today but it wasn't list as available while other available items which were due are reached their start date were visible.

In a sequential project (where each action has to be performed in order), the available item is by definition the one at the very top of the list. As it is sequential, you can't do anything else until you have completed the first available action.

In parallel projects (where it doesn't matter what order you do the actions in), the action that is highlighted as the first available item is still the one at the very top of the list, but others are also by definition available too. The highlighting occurs because you still might have a preferred order to perform the actions in, but not one that is essential for you to be able to complete the project. So, if you move another action to the top, that one will become highlighted as the first available.

If you throw in due dates, these will take priority over items that don't have due dates, but not over the item that is top of the list in project view.
