Clippings shortcut gone rogue Thread Tools Search this Thread Display Modes
So....here's my problem...it's a little convoluted...

I've got my OF clippings shortcut set up as ctrl-option-space, and that works great in most apps. However, it doesn't work in Mail.app, because for some reason, the Mail>Services>"OmniFocus: Send to Inbox" in Mail.app is associated with the command Option-O.

I think this is because I made that association a long time ago, to make my Send to Inbox shortcut in Mail the same as it is in Entourage, for which I have a special script that processes emails to OF with Option-O.

However, I want to undo that in Mail.app, and just use ctrl-option-c, like in everything else.

The problem is: This Option-O shortcut in Mail.app does not appear in the standard System Preferences keyboard shortcuts panel!! I can't make it go away. I have no idea how I set it up, and I have no idea how to remove it.

When I try to include Mail.app in the OF Preferences Clippings panel (by checking its box) to give it the standard ctrl-option-c shortcut, that shortcut just (apparently) conflicts with the existing Option-O one, and doesn't work.

So...how could I possibly have created the Option-O for Mail>Services>"OmniFocus: Send to Inbox" in Mail.app (such that it even shows that command in the menu pull down) in such a way that it's NOT visible in the System Preferences keyboard shortcuts panel? Some kind of Automator or script? Where would that be? How do I get rid of it?

Thanks for any help fixing a mess I apparently created...

Are you sure you don't have any Application Keyboard Shortcuts defined for Mail? If the triangle is closed, you wouldn't see it mention the OmniFocus service.

You could also try moving your Library/Preferences/com.apple.universalaccess.plist file aside after quitting your applications and then restarting first OmniFocus and then Mail.

Thanks for responding. Yes, I'm sure there is no application shortcut for Mail.

Can you explain what you mean by "move the file aside" in explicit steps, and what that will do (what is that file for?)?

Thanks!

What happens if you do a safe boot (hold the shift key)? If you only start up OmniFocus and then Mail, do you still have the unwanted keyboard shortcut?

To get rid of the file as I suggested, first quit System Preferences if you are running it. In the Finder, use Go->Go to Folder... to go to ~/Library/Preferences where you'll find the com.apple.universalaccess.plist file. Rename it to be com.apple.universalaccess.plist.keep and log out and back in again. This file keeps track of any keyboard shortcuts you set up, and removing it should give you a clean slate. You could also use the Restore Defaults button on the Keyboard Shortcuts page, though you might still want to keep the original in case you want to go back.

I was not able to complete a safe boot. When I restart and hold the Shift key, I get the Apple logo and spinning gear icon for several minutes...it just hangs. I tried two separate occasions, same result. For future reference, at what point do I hold the Shift key: After the "Bong"? After the Apple logo appears? When? And until when?

I did Restore Defaults under Keyboard Shortcuts. The unwanted Option-O shortcut for Mail>Services>"OmniFocus: Send to Inbox" in Mail.app is still there, and still visible in the menu pulldown.

I then renamed the file you mentioned as you said, and restarted. The unwanted shortcut is still in Mail.app, although I did notice that a new com.apple.universalaccess.plist file was created in the same place, apparently automatically. Should I now just delete the old ".keep" version?

As I feared, it seems I somehow added this unwanted shortcut OUTSIDE of the normal shortcut processes and files.

Any other ideas? Thanks so much in advance for your help.

Posting again, hoping for some wisdom...

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455 describes how to do the Safe Boot procedure. If your system hangs when doing a Safe Boot, that makes me suspicious that you might have some other problems lurking under the hood. Is this machine still under AppleCare?

Do you have this same behavior in a freshly created user account?

Another tactic to try would be to hold down the shift key when logging in. If your account is set to log in automatically, just log out and log back in, holding down the shift key when you click the login button. This disables any startup items you might have. If you still see the unwanted shortcut, then you might conclude that you've got something lodged in your preferences that is setting this up, or whatever app(s) you ran prior to checking the state of the shortcut might be at fault.

Did you ever try setting up the desired "normal" shortcut for Mail in the keyboard preferences pane?
