Is there a way of filtering a plan, or collapsing some task groups, then exporting to PDF and seeing only the filtered/rolled plan in the export?

I have a detailed plan, and a client with a short attention span...

Yes.
1) Choose "Filter Tasks" from the View menu.
2) Set up a filter that matches the tasks you want to show your client.
3) Click OK
4) Choose "Export" from the File menu.
5) Make sure "PDF Vector Image" is the selected format in the drop-down list.
