Omniweb vs Safari: H.264 playback Thread Tools Search this Thread Display Modes
While watching a long video on youtube (H.264, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGyh1Qsw-Ak) I noticed that my CPU % was way up. Checking things out showed that OW was using about 90% of the CPU (on a dual 2.8GHz iMac).

I then opened the same video in Safari and started watching it, but Safari onlu uses < 15% of the CPU.

Is this due to Safari handing off the decoding to the graphics card?

If so, why can't OW do this, as surely that's all handled "under the covers" by WebKit?

If not, why is OW so slow in comparison?

Versions: OSX 10.6.2, Safari 4.0.4, OW 622.10
PS: I was running the OW beta, but it ate my bookmarks/favourites so I went back to the 622.10

thanks,
d

I see lower CPU load for some videos in Safari, too. Checked that out as I noticed stuttering with this iPad ad from Apple:
http://www.apple.com/ipad/gallery/#hardware06

Runs smooth in Safari, stutters at some points with OW. I have a 13" MBP with OS X 10.6.2.
