If you select some text, and click the 'Document Color' button in the Cmd-T (Show Fonts) dialog, you will be able to apply a background color just to that selection.

( or background color in the text inspector)
or better still - Highlight (F1) towards the bottom of the utility drawer. Last edited by RobTrew; 2012-09-13 at 11:31 AM..
