The relevant section of the Mac help file (setting text preferences) does refer to 'text substitution', but suggests that this is a feature of a particular subset of Apple's own applications.
(I'm afraid that the only reference which I could see to '
universal text substitution' in the pages currently indexed by Google turned out to be your post :-)
The only third-party text expander which I have personally used with OF is
TextExpander, which seems to be working fine.
