URL auto-completion: "http://" and "www." Thread Tools Search this Thread Display Modes
Hi,

whenever I type incomplete URLs like "cyberport.de" or "markbass.it" in Omniweb, I get the "host not found" error, whereas Safari takes me to the right place.

It seems OW only auto-completes those links with a preceding "http://" while Safari adds "http://www.".

Is there a way to make OW behave like Safari in that respect? Maybe with a slick set of shortcuts?

Best regards,
Patrick

Adding "www" only works if the domain has www in it. Otherwise adding it automatically won't work and may take you to an unexpected place - i.e. "www.example.com" is a different domain name than "example.com" and both can be in use.

Thanks, mshalperin.

Those domains without "www." seem to be rare though, don't they? At least I never encountered a false positive with Safari (i.e. Safari adding a "www." to my input and by that navigating to a different, unwanted site.)

I would prefer this behaviour from OW:
if my typed input "cyberport.de" produces a "host not found" error, OW should not present that error but add the "www." instead and load that web site.

Thus I got no bad surprises.

Safari 3.1.1 doesn't add the www either - just tried it with cyberport.de and got "Safari can't find the server." After manually adding www, and getting page, typing "cyberport.de" in a blank URL box got 2 pulldown choices from the history - with and without www. It works exactly the same as OW.

OTOH, entering "slysoft.com" in either OW or Safari automatically redirects to "www.slysoft.com" probably pulled from the DNS server. Again, they worked the same in both browsers.

It's the DNS sever, not the browser, which redirects to the www URL. Neither browser (or any other I know of) have a fail test and auto add www.

cyberport.de works for me with safari, but not with OW.
The only solution for now is to use a software like textexpander to set www.*.fr, www.*.jp etc… in the address bar.
I would also know if there is solution for OW.

Having OmniWeb add "www" on every site will cause all kinds of problems.

Consider going to, say, mail.yahoo.com only to find that it's now www.mail.yahoo.com. (okay, bad example, Yahoo did the Right Thing and made www.mail.yahoo.com redirect to mail.yahoo.com)

Domain admins SHOULD redirect or otherwise manage things so www.domain.com is the same as domain.com.

But, for now, just add the www. prefix if it's necessary.
