RFC: Poss. solution to hierarchy woes? Thread Tools Search this Thread Display Modes
I've posted this feature request to Omni, but I'd be interested in your thoughts - would anyone miss the swipe-to-delete facility in favour of easy indenting/outdenting/grouping? There's plenty of other ways to delete actions, but no simple hierarchy tools...

Feature request:
In Projects and Inbox views, remove the swipe-an-action-to-delete-it
functionality and replace with a facility to swipe-an-action-right to
indent/group it and swipe-it-left to outdent/ungroup it.

Longer version:
There's an urgent need for functionality that'll allow us to work more
directly with action groups. Currently, making an action group (ie,
fleshing out a higher-level task into actionable items) requires you
to create a new action, then use its inspector's move facility to move
it inside the action you want to turn into a group. This is a number
of steps, and requires you to use a dialog box to move an item,
picking its destination from yet another popup, and then tapping
"Done".

There is already an obvious way to delete actions in the action
inspector (the little dustbin button), and if a user wants to delete a
number of actions at a time, there's an additional method by
tap-and-holding an action until the delete and move tabs appear up the
sides.

No functionality would be lost, therefore, by repurposing the
swipe-an-action manoeuvre into a way to indent or outdent items, much
like you can do from the keyboard in the Mac version (using
Cmd-Ctrl+arrow keys). Swiping an action right to indent it and swiping
left to unindent it would be fast and intuitive, with obvious visual
feedback,. Even to a new user, the required action to undo the
grouping (just swipe it back again) should be obvious.

It would provide an elegant solution to the following problems:
- it's currently impossible to select multiple items to move, making
inbox processing slower. If it was easy to swipe to group items, they
could then be moved as one, then swiped out of the group again if
necessary
- the UI as it is provides no way to select items at all, as a tap on
an item brings up its inspector. Therefore there's no way to provide
indenting/grouping using separate buttons on the toolbar. An operation
directly on the item itself would work though.

Good idea. UI conventions for iPad could pose a problem though.

Nice idea!

Potential variant: What if the swipe to indent/outdent only worked in rearrange mode? (Tap and hold an action in the current version to activate arrange mode.). That would provide most of the benefits of your proposal while preserving the iOS-standard swipe-to-delete. Of course, indenting/outdenting would be less convenient than in your proposal. Thoughts?

Good idea. It wouldn't be as convenient, but at least all the 'movement' functions, in/out/up/down would be together in the same mode.

Making that mode quicker to get to - possibly by sticking a "Move mode" button on the toolbar - would be help greatly as well. Currently, the two methods of getting into the re-arrange mode both involve tapping and holding, which always slows you down.
