What can I do to get some objects to go into an existing shared layer? It just keeps creating a new layer. I have the destination layer unlocked and selected. (v5.1.1)

What can I do to get some objects to go into an existing shared layer? It just keeps creating a new layer. I have the destination layer unlocked and selected. (v5.1.1)

ensure that the layer is not only selected but is selected to be edited this si denoted by a pencil tool next to the selected layer, it can be selected for editing by clicking to the left of the layers icon
