Ad blocking partially broken in beta 3! Thread Tools Search this Thread Display Modes
Rather than searching the source, you could just activate the Web Inspector and use that to identify your ad elements in the CSS...

Given that this is OmniGroup's first pass at re-implementing the blocked content fill, I think its safe to say that these are just niggling bugs that will be corrected in future versions. I'm pretty sure they don't want ugly grey, unclickable boxes littering pages...

Another bug in the ad blocking - if you move the blocked image down off the page and back, I get artefacts in the display:

(that should be one block and not the multiple divisions seen in that image)

Moving the mouse over the blocked ad to highlight it will clear the artefacts.

I can confirm that many ads that once were blocked no longer are in b3. Wow, what a pain!!

Yes, setting aside the discussion on how the blocked ads will appear, why are previously blocked ads appearing in beta 3?

Pardon my ignorance, but how do you do this?

I've been running around with a blocked urls list lately that is blocking pretty much everything so please, if you have example ads that aren't getting blocked please share.

Could you please share that list?

Here's a few that show in beta 3 but not beta 2:

http://www.macuser.com/
The text ads below the skyscraper on the right.

http://www.hollywoodtuna.com/
All the text "blogads" on the right.

http://www.popoholic.com/
Again, the blogads

http://www.dpreview.com/
The Kingston memory ad

http://www.dcresource.com/
The banner at the top

Many of these are written by Javascript, and I have a rule to block the script (e.g. googlesyndication.com) and that used to work.

Code:
defaults write com.omnigroup.OmniWeb5 WebKitDeveloperExtras -bool true
Be aware that it is not stable or supported so it can have undesirable effects (that is, it can cause crashes). Once activated, you get an Inspect Element option at the bottom of the contextual menu that brings up the Web Inspector palette:

Ah, sweet, I've been using that in the WebKit nightly builds for several weeks now. Didn't realize it was available in OW yet.

We'll block iframes but not text that's placed directly on the page. Looks like we may need to reconsider this--the fact that we don't block text is nice if you decide to visit a whole domain that's been blocked. Of course it means we fail in these situations.

They show up as blocked for me. What were you using to block these two? I notice dcresource has some more text ads injected onto the page...

My current block list looks like this:

/ads\..*\.net/
/ads\..*\.co(m|\.uk)/
/a\..*\.com/
/a\..*\.net/
/ai\..*\.com/
/ai\..*\.net/
/as\..*\.com/
/as\..*\.net/
/ads/
/adv/
/adverts/
/viewad/
/sponsors/
/promote\..*
/phpAdsNew
/.*/ad_banners/.*
/.*/adrevolver/.*/
adimage\.php
/.*\.doubleclick\.net/
/.*\.googlesyndication\.com/
/.*\.atdmt\.com/
/.*\.mediaplex\..*/
/.*\.falkag\..*/
/media\.fastclick\.net/
/.*\.advertising\.com/
/image-[0-9]*
intellitxt
mspaceads\.com
/lads\.myspace\.com/promotions
/lads\.myspace\.com/mini/
http://kermit\.macnn\.com/
mediamgr\.ugo\.com
http://rcm\.amazon\.com/
adserv
/.*\.blogads\.com/

I just added the blogads line.
