Oxymoron: OmniFocus Thread Tools Search this Thread Display Modes
Maybe the oxymoronic nature of the title of our favorite tool has already been discussed, but it's recently hit me with a good deal of clarity. I've read the book and I've been applying OF and GTD to my life for about a year now. So I feel like I'm someone who knows the rules and generally has the hang of it.

What's recently resonated with me: You can't "focus" on "everything". Duh.

However, when you work in an organization of independent thinkers, everyone seems to be focused on something other than what you're focused on. In essence, the collective group is OmniFocused - focused on everything.

In another thread, a forum member stated that "David Allen has it all wrong". This person accurately states that her boss is the decision maker - he decides the focus.

I suppose in writing this, I'm admitting that I've lost my focus. In an environment that is "OmniFocused" I'm finding it rather difficult to narrow down to a single focus element at any given time. @Work, OF seems to have been relegated to my "Do not forget this item" list instead of my Next Action list. On the other hand, @Home, where I have some control, OF works great! ;-)

Interesting... I never thought about it meaning... focused on everything. I took the meaning to be focusing on one thing from the many. Or really cool focus.

There are a lot of products out in the world with the name Omni. I think the general feel of the name is... the only thing you ever need... the omni... the all.

From the definition:
Quote:
One can generally paraphrase its meaning with circumlocutions such as "in all ways", "in all places" or "applying to all things"
http://www.babylon.com/definition/OMNI/English

Applying To all Things meaning, everything is in the system, OMNI, and I choose to focus on something, Focus.

I guess the name could be changed to... action focus. Or maybe focus focus, or the inevitable, hocus focus. :-D Maybe we get rid of the focus and go with, action jackson. Or combine the two and go with, Action Hocus.

Unless a person is working on a construction line and has their entire day planned out for them, or in in a widget shop cranking widgets all day, then there is still room for OmniFocus. (according to Allen, cranking widgets all day is the ideal state of GTD)

Even if the boss is the decision maker, he decides the focus, my role will be a sub focus of that focus. And for my role, I make decisions or simply need to track what is happening.

GTD helps to get the cluster out of my mind and into an external mind... an Omni mind. Oooo... maybe that should be the name, Omni Mind. It doesn't matter if the items in my inbox come from my boss, from a customer, or from myself. If it needs to be done, it goes in the system. My Omni Mind.

I interpreted the meaning of OmniFocus to be HyperFocus.

One of my favorite names has always been OmniFu.
Because it brings up the connotation of Kung-Fu and mind like water.

And you can say things like, get chur fu on.

But it also kinda sounds like OmniPoo... and that's not such a great image.

I always took the "Omni" in "OmniFocus" to mean "focus on anything" or "focus in any way."

But it really doesn't matter as it's just Omni Group's naming convention. Does the "Omni" in Omni Group really mean they do everything? Are they planning on branching out into auto repair, flower arrangements, or plumbing services? Probably not, but who knows. Maybe they just want to keep their options open. Or maybe "omni" just sounds cool. :)

I only have one more thing to say on this topic: for some reason, when I tap out the name "OmniFocus" in a hurry on my iPhone, it often seems to come out as "OmniDicus."

I don't know what that means. Is it maybe someone who's a jerk about GTD canon, a GTD Nazi? Or maybe it's just because "i" is next to "o" and "D" is next to "F". I hope I'm not being an "OmniDicus." :)
