As Craig noted, you can accomplish this in OmniFocus by flagging everything that starts today and then using a 'flagged' perspective (or I suppose you could simply set 'today' as a start date for everything you want to flag). However, the simplicity of Things' implementation is definitely superior, including the ability to click 'Not Today' and have the item return to its previous state (i.e. its original set of attributes).
Reading this thread, and this post in particular, made me realise why I keep oscillating between Things and OmniFocus. I like the structure that OF offers but really like the simplicity and transparency of Things. To be honest I lean heavily towards Things but keep coming back to OmniFocus when I get fed up with the slow development of Things. Then I get frustrated by the relative opacity of OF on the iPhone, chiefly because of the need to skip constantly between Due Soon, Overdue and Flagged, and switch back to Things for a while.

I guess The Hit List will introduce yet another blend of arrangements to this increasingly crowded space.
I've been oscillting back and forth between the OF and Things as well ...

I HAVE to have a simple, reliable look at things that must be done today.

I manage a small IT group with a mix of projects from long-term to daily break/fix. A quick list what's due today makes it possible for me to organize my time simply and effectively.

When I identify an item in OF that is due today ... and then have to search for it later in my tree of projects or with an extra filter ... it's just not worth the time ... precious time I sometimes don't have.

Then ... I go back to thinking that Things is my solution.

Perhaps you already knew this, but you can double click items in Context view to open a new window showing the item within its project in Planning view. That doesn't solve the main issue of this thread, but seems like it might help with this particular issue.

+1 on this. Things view is effectively the "due soon" view combined with "any flagged items" view. One that could OR the two groups together would be highly useful.

This is another reason why I keep dabbling with Things. I'm "Not getting things done" because there are strengths and weaknesses to each application... and right now absent actual GTD like Curt is doing, the simplicity of Things offers LOTS to me, but the dearth of features brings me back to OF every time... so far ;-)
Good point ...
