i need a smaller font than 9, and that seems to be the smallest, any way around this?

Sure, just type a number into the box above the list of sizes.

I'm using version 5.2.1 on MacOSx. I only see a dropdown list and no way to enter a number (clicked the Fonts icon in the toolbar, which brought up a popup to select collections, family, typeface, size)
Is there another screen i'm missing?

Sorry, it was in condensed mode and all i had to do was drag it down to expand the window.
